I don't understand, why would a man grown in the golden age of computing - late 90-ies and early 2000s - would not understand the effort to bring those times back in MATE desktop.
Right now we are living in disaster created by Apple (correct me if I'm mistaken, but they are to -thank- for disastrous overlay scrollbars?) and smartphones.
What was wrong about pages which looked like www.netsurf-browser.org? Apart from being unusable on a phone. It is lovely, it is static, it is packed with information. Now we have disasters made for smartphone, which obviously look ridiculous on 23 or more inch screen.

So for the record, I'm not a linux user yet but I aspire to be one soon! I've been watching a crap ton of vids & reading up on diferrent distros and I've narrowed my search to a couple of distros that I like as my 1st linux install, namely Ubuntu & Garuda. As a non linux user, can someone PLEASE explain to me why everyone always pronounces the -G- in -GNOME-! Because it makes my ears burn every time I hear it, lol...

Desktop Icons is not the way -Windows used to work-, Desktop Icons is the way that ALL other OSses and environments work (Windows, macOS, GNOME2, previous releases of GNOME 3, MATE, KDE, xfce, Cinnamon, ...). I don't know what the heck GNOME devs smoke to remove Desktop Icons. But let's shake hands, I also use vim and htop, even if I am a Linux user, not a Linux geek by any means.

When I installed any version of Linux... the installation was completed successfully, but after restarting my computer hdmi there is no signal .... knowing I have a Nvidia graphics card 1060 3 gb, and x370 carbon motherboard, and the Rizen 7 1700 processor .... -You always wanna be on more recent kernel versions- - not always, Derek. Some people will be screwed trying to use newer kernels, because of hardware issues. There are a fair few people stuck ever since 20.04, because of the limited available kernel range.

Ubuntu Budgie is my favourite version of Ubuntu but i personally prefer to use Debian with Budgie instead although i use Lubuntu on my gaming PC cos i find that the LXQT DE gives me the smoothest performance in games especially with the low latency kernel.

My desktop has icons and files because my desk is full of a suff too. I tidy it up when I finish. Maybe I need to keep it empty and see how my productivity changes

if htop is not installed, there is a high chance that top is installed, just type -top-, the predecessor of htop. (It provides better memory infomation btw).
