You can use morph transition for any object
Just make sure you put the names of the object from first and second slide same along with '!!'
For Example: I take a square and group it with a circle and rename the grouped object as !!Apple
Then on next slide I draw a triangle and rectangle and group them naming !!Apple
Morph transition will work

I agree. Morph is a great addition to PowerPoint, however, the feature is still very clunky and has a lot of limitations. I hope they will refine it in the future and add more features to make it more flexible.
