Why wait till 2020 to get a GNU/Linux Phone? You can get one today! - Rob Braxman Tech Do you have to wait until 2020 to get a GNU/Linux Phone? Are you waiting on the Librem 5 or the Pinephone. I am. But in the meantime, I can show you a Linux phone here. This is a flashed Android (Oneplus One) from circa 2014 and I paid $60 for it. See the demonstration. If your purpose for the GNU/Linux phone is to exceed the performance of an iPhone or new Android, then this video will not do it for you. Stick to the faster iPhone. My purpose here was to offer a privacy friendly alternative to the spy devices of Apple and Google. We understand that this will have repurcussions and limitations. Are the specs of this phone very far behind a Librem 5? Are there compatibility issues with other versions of Linux Desktop environments? Are there firmware issues that will still haunt us? These will be answered in a future video. I will also show a tutorial of how to install UBports Ubuntu Touch on the Oneplus One phone used in this demo in another video coming soon (subscribe so you don't miss it. WARNING: Do not install UBPorts until I publish the video because you will waste so much time. The instructions are unclear, and there's a bug on the Installer which I can fix. Installation is possible only using a Linux (preferred, Windows 10, or Mac computer with a USB cable. A Oneplus One uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 8974-AC Quadcore, 2. 5GHz, Krait 400. How does this compare to the specs of a Librem 5 running an i. MX8M Quadcore 1. 5Ghz? The specs between the old phone and the new are awfully close, including the camera. There are many more topics to be discussed here about Linux phones. But at least having a Linux phone in hand and seeing it in action is better than any theory. I want to see the practicality and problems first hand

I believe having a different screen aspect ratio (maybe something like the one on bb passport) is essential for any Linux phone.
That's why I was very disappointed about the librem5.
Let's face it, people don't crave Linux phone to scroll their Facebook timeline, but rather to do some real work using real filesystem and real applications.
I don't know maybe I will always be the iMate pocket PC guy who resents the steve-jobs-way of mobile computing.
Yeah and one more thing:
Linux phone must have physical QWERTY keyboard. How do you guys expect to use command line!

it looks like the Nexus 7 still sells new on Amazon under $165. any plans on installing it on that? the tablet has a rather large bezel. i'd rather install it on my iPad mini 2. i wonder if someone is coding for iPad, what is the term? porting it, or is that BSD terminology? i want to have a tablet and phone with Ubuntu Touch and a laptop and desktop and car with Ubuntu. thanks for making this video!

I do have one Question Rob. How is the phone/call experience? That's the truly only important thing for me. If that works, I'll switch totally. the rest is just candy far as I'm concerned. I use my desktop for everything else. And I don't game on my phone, but I do use the camera occasionally and a lot of browsing. Not much music since if I don't have my desktop near by. well, I'm working.

Rob, My sister in law tried to get out from under her iphone and she said it was so confusing she didn't do it? Can you do a vid on a step by step process on how toi prepare for the transfer? What do we do with contacts, how to back them up and what else to do we need to do, then when do we buy and what is the process for getting contacts and apps back on the phone?

Let's stop calling the spying google and others do -data harvesting- and start calling it what it is: SPYING. You see they get away with what would otherwise be illegal by playing word games and making excuses like -we're only trying to provide better service for you-. Yet, what everyone really wants is privacy. How about they start delivering THAT?

I love my iPhone but they removed the headphone jack. But I do think google and Apple is over stepping. I own a Apple phone but they say I have no right to mod the software on it same with my computer. Now I game on windows 10 with my MacBook. But I do hope other software option open up for computers and smart devices.

I have no words to describe the service you're doing. I've been thinking of how to get private on mobile for years and I just found you. However, I still like to take good pictures and I was wondering if there is any linux phone with a good camera.
Hopefully they'll also have the kill switches too.

Rob, Tell Rogan that rights don't exist because one has something to hide, it is because they have no right to pry. I'd ask him why he is more willing to ask you what you are hiding while allowing the government to continue to hide everything it does? I'd say his priorities are out of whack.

Rob, why dont you just order a few thousand phones spec'd your way from a supplier and sell thm? You'd be THE linux phone guy and have super traction. BTW i dont understand your website. I cant find stuff there. What am i missing?

Hi
Are there any real games for gnu linux phone like pubg?
Is it smooth as apple phones?
Please don't tell me it's a professional phone for only linux users. If it is it will never be a successful OS among other OSes
