I like your idea or little tip for getting rid of the annoying seams between the shapes, though it will only work if you have a solid colour for the shape, it won't work if you have a gradient on the shape of some other effect. You can compensate for this by changing the stroke to also have a gradient, but it all starts to get a bit tedious if you get to this point. I love Affinity products, especially 'Designer', but think they could improve some of the options for doing Isometric art. Kudos for Affinity for what they have already done with their grid system, it's very flexible and has a lot of settings that can be changed. No doubt they will incrementally improve things on further updates to the software. After having a closer look at the problem, I can see why maybe Affinity has allowed these seams to happen - without the seams it would be very hard to see the separation between each shape. Here's another alternative to try to reduce or get rid of the seams - create a cube, all sides being the same colour, you get the dreaded seams - now change and adjust the top of the cube plane to a lighter shade or darker shade of that colour until the seams disappear (Not ideal I know. Also you can reduce the seams by grouping the shapes of the object together and adding a small amount (0. 2) of Gaussian Blur in the 'Layer Effects' to the group. Hopefully this problem comes to the attention of Affinity and they introduce a solution to the problem, something as simple as a toggle switch to turn the seams on and off, I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to implement. I also think Affinity Designer's snapping at times doesn't work that well, but most probably me not have the settings correct or not doing things correctly. I have been experimenting with Inkscape for doing Isometric art and think it works well for doing the line work then importing that as a SVG file into Affinity Designer for colouring and texturing. Inkscape has it limitations as well, it doesn't support CYMK, so your colours will be messed up if you decide your artwork is something you want to print. Affinity Designer does support CYMK. I'm currently using version 1. 10. 4. 1198 of Affinity Designer.

My grid settings are exactly as yours, but my divisions won't visually match. My grid subdivisions appear as 8 horizontal and 4 vertical. In settings it says all three axis are at 8, but they're not. It makes it hard to follow along exactly when drawing the keyboard and monitor. The only way I can get 8 on the up axis is to change the pixel count to match that of the other axis, but then the desk will be misaligned with the grid. AND the 64 x 32 isometric preset completely disappears from the preset menu showing only various 1cm options.

Outstanding tutorial. I'm about to take the plunge on Affinity Designer. At 04: 15 you mentioning taking out the seam between joined planes using a border. Are you sure those seams are showing when you render to an output format? I know sometimes in Illustrator I would see seams like that (particularly when doing isometric work) while building my objects but once I export to JPG, PNG, etc. they disappear and show a clean join between the planes. If they are still showing, the add border hack certainly fixes it.

When you zoomed in to do the side of the table how did you change the grid size smaller? why did you not explain that it does not happen automatically? I do not understand how you could forget to mention something that important to new users? If anyone knows how she did this it would be a great help to me to learn how to use this Software I am stuck there and I cant find the info online? or maybe my software is broken because it wont let me do that it just stays the same size?

another great tutorial, i have a question, i recently designed my home electrical schematics, but when i print the document from within the program i get a big black half-sphere
onto the paper, i tried every setting possible, the only way that i can print my plan is to export it first as a pic, and then print it via fsviewer, very annoying, do you have a solution, thanx

I loved the tutorial! A little fast (nothing that space bar can't fix) and really long, but nothing great ever came easy! I've been using Affinity Designer for a couple of months now, but I just got into isometric design as well because it just looks so cool and this really helped me get a handle of it. Thanks a ton!

Who would have thought that a tool so inexpensive could be so flexible and cleverly designed? And who would have assumed we'd get comprehensive lessons on how to use it, absolutely free? As a long-suffering Adobe Illustrator and Fireworks user, I can hardly believe the value packed into this product.

Thankx for the excellent tutorial. I am 65 and i am getting it, how to design in Affinity Designer. I want to design 3 D lamps from small wooden planks and i want to see how that looks from behind. And from other pints of view. Is that possible? Like in Sketchup?

I think working with black background is much better, it makes the pixels much more visible.
