Since this was published there have been updates to some distributions such that 32 bit apps will not work on a 64 bit system. Putting aside the fact the Garmin will not produce a Linux installation, it appears that they will not invest in upgrading their installation to 64 bit for later Windows operating systems either. From their perspective this is unnecessary (for now) because Windows will recognise both architectures. To be fair on Garmin, Linux has rather let its users down when (inadvertently and effectively) withdrawing functionality for 32 bit installations with Wine which is why you will receive the -Failed to load libGL- error on the most modern distributions when trying to install Garmin Express. This is not just restricted to this application, it will affect any installation of 32 bit games and applications at the moment until the Linux developers restore this functionality. This problem will not occur if you are operating a 32 bit machine with older versions of Linux. As ever with Linux even with the latest releases there is likely a bash workaround although this rather involved and not guaranteed to work on all machines. Call me a defeatist but I wouldn't spend the hours geeking my way through the problem. I would find it simpler and quicker to go get a nasty cheap second hand windows laptop and drag it out once a year to update my sat-nav. Either that or run wine on an old Linux box.

Everything works in Manjaro except it will not update the maps. I tried downloading the maps to the computer but it only works for like 2 or 3 minutes then the error message comes up. The backups, the software installation etc. works great. I tried downloading to the computer to make sure that this had nothing to do with the microsd card and it did not work either. Thanks for trying and I hope this helps us make this work for all of us.
Many people here have a problem with the Garmin device not connecting but that can easily be fixed with the Garmin communicator plugin. This will get your device recognized and will allow you to install the software but it will not help with the maps. I have the Garmin Drivesmart 50LMT and I heard that this device really does not work with Linux but if others have a different device then maybe the plugin will work for them.

was really hoping this would work! thanks for trying. software dependencies are endlessly changing. everything seemed smooth up to the .Net framework install. the log file reports that the payload at the Microsoft reference does not exist so it drops out. Failed to acquire payload: NetFx472Redist
i manually tried to download and install .Net 4.6 and it hangs. if i cancel out, i get a return code of 0x80004004. the first dialogue reads that the -Windows Modules Installer Service is not available on this computer-. this seems to be a reference to the Windows Installer failing? not sure how far down this rabbit hole i want to go.

I tried the process once and failed. I stopped watching at 4:72. I found your web, deleted the folder created from the first try, and went through the process a second time. Again, I failed because my Linux Mint distribution had trouble loading the .NET Framework 4.7.2. I'm usually pretty good at following instructions, but this time, I could not sort it out. So, I just connected to an old Windows laptop to get the software updated and newest maps for the Garmin. Thank you for researching this and recording for most of us Linux fans.

Just tried installing GarminExpress on OpenSuse 15.1 running wine-3.7. Everything worked up to the step of running GarminExpress.exe. The wine window opens fine, but then crashes due to -Application: GarminExpress.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an internal error in the .NET Runtime at IP 00E5045-. From some quick research that seems to be a memory problem; not sure there is an immediate solution.

Thank you Chris. I moved to Linux recently but I'm a basic pc user and not a programmer so everything is difficult if there isn't an -install- for me to use. But I followed your instructions, just set it up on Linux Mint and it works perfectly. The only thing I noticed is that it created a Garmin express shortcut on my desktop that runs the program on my Mint desktop or I can also use it in the Wine virtual desktop aswell.

This is NOT helpful. I cannot read your screen, and you go too fast to follow along, not to mention cannot see what you are typing. Plus, your web link above is broken. I have an old Garmin that I should likely update the database. Since I've trashed my only Windows box and replaced with Ubuntu 20.04, would like to have more exact commands to use. Maybe a bit of explanation of what wine is?

The software just get's stuck and I cannot click -Add a device-. Interestingly the software does not seem to have hanged up, since it does change text at the top if you insert a garmin watch. I just cannot click on it or do anything to the software. A small black box also shows up in the beginning of the software start. I suspect this is stealing focus or somehting.

Chris thank you for doing this, glad to see this a long time coming for many of us linux users.
Everything works so for detects device, but when I go to check for updates it says in red sorry we are having problem with our servers. Have you tested this to see if you can update as of yet? Any help would be appreciated for sure.

Nice Wine install tutorial. I used Code Weavers CrossOver and had the same results. Garmin Express runs but fails to detect the GPS. I started complaining to Garmin in 2008 about lack of Linux support. How do we pressure Garmin into developing a web-based, not OS based updater.
