Been thinking about adding a pfSense firewall in between the cable modem and the WAN/LAN router. Question is, really, can I keep the WAN/LAN router doing DCHP and all that good WiFiness and have the FW next to the cable modem? I suspect I can, just wondering really.
Good video as always.
Going follow you on a distro hop and put Manjaro on my new (to me) laptop (dreaded W10 Pro) as a way of seeing if I can get it to replace Mint, with what I use it for (KDenLive, KB3, VLC, Quake 2 etc). M$ is getting too cozy over there and I think having a fleeing plan could be a good thing...

Actually I may give a further idea of what you can do with this device. There is a article on their website that the apu2c4 is able to run VMware ESXi with that you can run a VM with pfSense and other VM with Rockstor/Nas4Free (FreeNAS is optout because the 8 GB RAM minimum requirement) using as storage with the SATA drive that can hold the device and the VM running on the mSATA, on top of that, are some articles on mounting the UniFi controller on pfSense, with that you can have in just one device many solutions!

For some reason my pc engines machine isn't picking up my flash drive. So I can get connected, but when I boot, just no option to run from the flash drive. USB is first in the boot order too, but the USB doesn't even appear as an option when I press F10. I've tried burning the iso to the USB using etcher and the DD command on the PFSense site. Very strange.
Edit: And now trying a different USB drive, it works.

Awesome video. Very useful content! I-m going to share this video with a colleague that recently asked me about pfsense. You explain it better than I can.
btw, The -PC Engine- by NEC (aka the Turbo-Grafx 16) is one of my favorite gaming consoles. Thanks to a strong childhood imprint from obsessing over the video game PC Engine, I experienced strong semantic dissonance watching this video. Haha.

I love these old Titus videos. I still learn alot and benefit from his knowledge. I am planning on setting up my own Pfsense box. And, he's right that the Cable modems from Comcast can't handle the gigabit speed. I've got gigabit but my network can only get 300 Mbit of speed. Not the wiring -- it's that the CPU on the modem isn't fast enough for the true speed that they have now.

You can also buy appliances from Netgate directly now, with an official pfSense install on them. The smallest ones arent even all that pricey. Also, another possible use for that third port is as a sync port to another pfSense, so you can do an active/passive CARP cluster. May be a bit overkill-ish for the home, but works brilliantly in a corporate settings.

So looking back at this, I'd need an APU like apu2d4 then an enclosure, power adapter, and M stata drive? I was trying to figure out the best APU for me, it looks like the apu2d4 gives me a quad core and 4GB of memory from what I can tell.

What if I have every intention of just using dhcp and then having a reserved address for a few things and I don't really care if the static address is the same as before. Just leave it on set wan/lan and then hook everything back up?

I need to find a good networking video or book or something. I understand parts of this and it would be good to consider switching to something like this as I'm using a consumer router and it's starting to show its age a bit.
