How many people check their PC cables? Most people don't even clean their dust filters once every couple months and you expect them to check power cables?
This is not a solution. The fact that the connector can back out even when its clicked in is a bad connector design. I had PSU screws and motherboard screws back out from standoffs on their own from just slight vibration of the fans spinning 24/7. It looks like these connectors are backing out and start to melt from bad connection. Want a better fix? Glue them. At least then if they melt, you will have proof that it was all the way in and still melted, which would mean nvidia need to recall all of the cards with these connectors.

FULLY SEATED connectors are can still melt on the card side. See NorthridgeFix video 4090 FE Connector melted with Cablemod Adapter installed 1min17sec
You can CLEARLY see that it's fully seated. So much so that it plastic welded itself together...fully seated.
The cable side didn't melt in the vid but this is still an excellent idea, still wouldn't have helped the owner of the card in the aforementioned vid.
Alex also asks a good question in the vid... why 4090's when 3090Ti's pull as much power if not sometimes more and use the same style connector and they don't melt???

this is dumb, they bring in a connector with thinner wires and housing and max it out,
leave no room for errors.
at the same time we have the older connector that would be safer at 300w than new at 600w
this NEW connector is real just made for server GPU with server air cooling,
just bump the old to 250w x3= 750w or use the old 20 pins connector.
having Ngreedia pushing a server connector onto the consumers just so they can safe on pcb cost and apple looking GPU.

Northridge still think that it is not a user error a fully professional guy that fixes these melted connectors and he still think there is a problem with the 4090 engineering so that these cables melt. I mean PLEASSSSE! These are just power cords... plug them properly, have enough contact and so low embedance... And everything will be fine... Plug them improperly without enough contact and then watch them melt. How could possibly be another reason??!!!!!

good for msi however when standard for this cables was in the works how the hell didn't they catch this type of problem , do their electrical/electronical engineers have a diploma? sorry but i expect better from people who create these standards , like if i was there testing first i'd see how i can fry that cable :) then find how to fix and shizz , this feels like an nvidia conspiracy to fry up gpu's so people buy them again

This must be how Nvidia is going to void all the warranties for the sheep that bought into that standard... Watch Nvidia start asking for pictures of your power supply connector! If they see yellow kiss your warranty goodbye! LOL

lol people still think this is the issue. Maybe just go back to the standard and give us our pci-e slots again until the sense latency issues are solved. Obviously they are unintentionally feeding too much amperage through the cable. We don t care if we need 3, 5, or even 7 connectors. We just don t want fire hazards in our children s bedrooms

It is really SCARY that the Lock Clip doesn't keep the 12VHPWR Plug completely seated in the socket correctly, how the hell has that design passed Quality & Safety Assesment.
That to me seems a MAJOR design flaw with the plug & socket that should be fixed properly not just with some coloured pin housings.

Sorry Gordon but this IS NOT a good idea. It just proves the connector IS NOT fit for purpose. We need a complete replacement since no connector should be able to not be correctly mated and still pass a dangerous amount of current over it.

Or you could not use a PSU cable design that melts on occasion, people never had issues with good old 6 & 8pin connectors and tbh even good quality Molex will never cause issues while being the most versatile connector in your system

A true fix would be for 12VHPWR to have a definitive click like regular ATX PCIe power cables that cannot be removed without pushing the tab down. The connector still being able to wiggle out can t be solved by adding some colour

Excellent idea, for a moment I thought they redesigned the retention to make it heavy duty, like some Geffen HDMI cables you see with a thumbscrew to avoid pull outs, but this is rather easier to implement.

Great idea, glad it is happening, hope everyone does it, but, as someone else said below, the fact it can be wiggled out even 1mm out even when clicked in and connected, is very poor design from PCIe SIG.

I mean... it's a useful band aid, but the connector needs revision, since it shouldn't be able to come out that much when latched. Not to mention, I don't think that insertion is the only issue at play here.
