we will go through several real-world examples for you to get a grasp of how can use the tool on your images glenn: Thanks for the video!
Your grasp of imagery and understanding of the finishing is more than just playing around with Photoshop.
I have to be content using gimp due to circumstances and being a senior citizen, but this is not a comparison if you consider my approach.
For replacing, or removing, duplicating and healing I use the clone tool and smudge tool which also allows adjustment of opacity.
A long horizontal railing or fencing member can be deleted using the clone tool starting with pressing control and then shift dragging the cursor to the end. Shift plus control gives perfect right angles
Of course adjustments have to be made.
One can replace a missing rail section using the smudge tool like above at full opacity.
A third eye can be added to a forehead using the clone tool.
What you can do with gimp, perhaps can be easily done with Photoshop but gimp does not have things so easy.
One has to be downright devious to take full advantage of the software!

Good day,
I am very new to this and I'm a tad stuck. I have an image of someone reading a newspaper but want to superimpose a different book to what they're reading, however, want to keep the fingers grasping the reading material to look realistic.
I am clueless as to how to start doing this. Are there any support out there to help me? Thank you!

A life saver video. One of my fav tool is patch tool, and this taught me some neat trick. Particularly holding Alt key to create straight selections and using patch tool along with clone stamp tool.

You talk so much about yourself instead of what must be done in the right order. Try using step by step short instructions and don't assume the viewer loves your talking.
