There s been debate over the last few years whether 3rd party antivirus software is actually needed with Windows 10. The marketing from these software makers will try to convince you that you need their software to stay protected. I will show you the various ways that you can stay safe on Windows 10 without using their antivirus software.

I would agree 100% ... and have not used AV software for years. But I would add two comments. #1 ... I've done benchmarks w/wo installed AV software and AV software kills your performance roughly by at least 30% ... depending on your i/o requirements. #2 ... I would like to add that a secondary addition to a non AV installation is a really good router. Once again ... depending on the architecture and what you're doing with your systems ... a good router will only add performance and security to any system. I have several systems and I've taken my compute/application servers intranet only and well behind the firewall. If you're careful ... you'll be ok.

Even if you _want to_ use a third-party antivirus, Windows 10 won t let you: I tried to install Avast, AVG ans BitDefender on two different laptops and a desktop pc; every time I tried all the three antivirus were so much crippled they became useless and unsable - causing issues to the system as well - and I had to uninstall the antivirus programs to make the computers work normally. This happened on all the three machines (the two laptops and the desktop pc). After that, I stuck with the Windows preinstalled default security suite....and, to be fully honest, I haven t really noticed a difference.

Excellent video, TechGunbo. I've used about every paid & free antivirus software out there, (Norton, McAfee AVS, ESET NOD32, Trend Micro, Comodo Dragon, Webroot, etc) but after some study, I learned there's not much difference between them & paid versions can be rather pricey. So I stopped using them about 3 years ago and haven't looked back. I use Windows Defender and a little common sense and have had no issues. I did turn off the cloud-delivered protection in Windows Defender, because I don't trust Microsoft with this feature.

Thanks :) A totally useless service in Windows that takes up a lot of resources is the Windows Search Service -- Just disable it and your computer is suddenly much faster! :) However, a very usefull feature in Windows is the System Files Control . Run it like this: open a cmd.exe window with admin rights then write sfc /scannow , then let it run to the end. This fixes potensial and current problems in Windows system files. For searching for files on your computer use Everything from voidtools.com, it is lightening fast.

I stopped using 3rd party AV software for over a year now, and don't have any issues. 3rd party AVs would frequently mess with my games being able to run, and mess with certain peripheral drivers. I manually set some firewall rules, have two popup blockers and strict rules on my Chrome browser, and only use Edge browser to stream my cable service. All my downloads go to different drives and needs permission before it can touch my Windows drive. I use Malwarebytes just to do an occasional scan for crap.

I have used Windows 7 and Windows 10 without Anti Virus software for years never had a problem but this is ONLY if you know what to do but if you want to go to unsecure site you DEFENETLY NEED Anti Virus software Kaspersky is the Best one you can get it for as little as 10 per year i have used Kaspersky since the very begging it has never failed me Total Security i have tested with many shitty things and the program always does its magic most of all Anti Virus programs are more trouble then anything else

Yea true about using the built in apps correctly is all you need but you need to know how to bypass or workaround what the virus has done(alot of times disabling these very apps and blocking from opening the most common ways into alot of those applications. Needing to keep noncorrupted copies in a small file somewhere and if ever facing them it will save you multidudes of time having them on hand to replace the file that's corrupt so that your able to open that app

I'm a Computer Technician and I completely agree that Win Defender is sufficient if you're reasonably tech savvy. As in, you know what not to click on and know the difference between malicious and legit programs. The amount of clients I have whose PC's were full of malware from online gaming/gambling etc, their computers started playing up so then they freak out and download a ton of PC Cleaner , dodgy A/V scanners and Driver Finders . Oh well, keeps me busy I guess.

I like your suggestion about using Virus Total to scan files. I tried it on a program file I had installed on my computer. It came back listing some virus issues. Some of which were added files and I think some were compromised system files. I uninstalled the program, deleted the installer file and then ran Defender Offline scan. How can I be sure the suspicious files VT indicated are gone? Need to verify I've solved the potential issue.
