If you want faster internet speeds with better reliability and privacy on Windows 10, I recommend changing your DNS server to one that is not supplied to you from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Faster Internet for FREE ????????? Typically you ISP's DNS servers ARE the fastest because they are part of your providers LAN that your modem logs on to. The performance improvement does not change at all with respect to web page loading or download speeds, your connection speed DOES NOT CHANGE. DNS (Domain Name Server) is ONLY for looking up a internet address number that is associated with a name (google.com - 172.217.5.78 [address translation]), these name/number associations are stored in a hidden ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) table in your computer for 4 hours. (the stored time does vary depending on the system hosting the table) [Every device capable of connecting to a network has it's own exclusive MAC (Machine Address Code) burned into it from the factory where it was manufactured, these MAC numbers are given to the manufacturers by an entity called ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and are what is used to assign a IP number to a specific device. Every MAC number is unique to every device in the world and can NEVER be used on another device EVER.] Here is the typical scenario... You open your web browser and type in google.com and hit enter ... First the browser looks in the ARP table for the address translation for google, if it is not found a request goes out to the assigned DNS server for a name/number translation. When the DNS server finds the translation, the number (172.217.5.78) is sent back to your browser [It is also stored in the ARP table at that time so future lookup's are faster] and then your browser contacts the number provided. All of this happens without you being able to see it, it is all automatic. Try typing 172.217.5.78 into your browser window. It goes straight to google.com without any DNS activity. If everyone knew the number of the website they wanted to visit, we would not need DNS. It is obviously easier to remember a name of a specific website than to remember all those numbers. Now internal networks [LAN - Local Area Network] using routers such as in Home or Business networks (including AD - Active Directory which also facilitates WAN - Wide Area Networks) must use DNS internally. Use the ping command against the external DNS server's number you are using and want to use then compare the time each takes. SUMMARY: Unless you are really concerned about privacy, then is is usually best to leave things alone and use the one provided by your ISP. If you can find a DNS server that is faster than the one provided by your ISP you will only save a few milliseconds which is less [or not much more] than the time it takes to blink your eyes.

The single digit servers are backbone machines, is it wise to point people to them and increase their transaction loading?? I have always found that allowing your homes gateway device to store the common translations and going direct to be the most efficient use of the infrastructure.. Windstream's 166.102.165.13 machine has worked fine for us for over a decade and it is what is stored in my gateway.. I point the computers on my network to it and all is well.. We are talking very small differences in time on the order of milliseconds and the only real benefit is for large server farms where this would add up.. Since the protocol forwarding updates of the tables and the secondary name servers hardware has vastly improved for the home user it is becoming irrelevant.. Googles server service tracks and stores your activity so they can sell it..

As you do mention in your pin you can change it on the router.. 2 things on this. 1 only do this to a router you bought.. the cable companies one you rent typically either wont allow it or they will change it back (because they have access to it since its their router your renting. 2. its easier to do the router than all the pc's however if you use a laptop and travel.. then do it on the pc as well. Also if you turn OFF dhcp on your computer to do this.. make sure its enabled on the router. or the computer wont get an ip address and you will have to manually assign one. Ok.. getting off my soap box. Great video. I prefer cloudflare for the privacy.. they also have an app for the phone as well.

Ping the different DNS server IP addresses to find your connection's fastest response time (see below, your results may differ). www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm is a nice DNS Benchmark utility. For a faster web-page response, add the URL and IP address to the host file to bypass the DNS server. Bro I'm not gonna lie ive tried many different things, my internet has been capped at 12mb/s because I live in a area that I cant get good internet but I use 4g internet. And I thought your video was fake so I did it anyway and no shit years and years ive tried vpns and all to try and get my internet faster, my original connection was 12mbits download 1mbit upload, after doing your video with the same domain server you use. Im not even lying 53mbit download 4.6mbit upload omg bro you are a legend and I am subbing right now forever. thank u so much man. this will really help my gaming

Why do it the hard way? Download a portable app called Dnsjumper. It takes all the pain out of it. It also shows which is the fastest. You click on it and away you go. Your ISP uses a default DNS. When it's broken millions have to wait until it's back online. I just switch to another one. Also, some ISPs block certain content they don't want you to see. I just switch to another DNS. They will know you are viewing content they don't want you to see. But they won't know what. They may cut your service off if they are real a-holes about it. I never had mine cut off though.

It's also possible to change the DNS on your router, but results will vary. In our case we had issues accessing our cable company's app on devices in our home... While IPv6 is not as widely used as IPv4, if you want to utilize those DNS server addresses, they're also listed in the description... Distance from the DNS server is one factor that can impact performance. Here in the New Orleans area, I find Cloudflare works the best for us, but you may need to experiment to find what works best for you... Thanks for watching :)

Ha, in one of my client's offices, a CPA firm, a DIY not-so-bright printer repair dude decided he'd do this to a client's PC. Problem is, they have an in house server, so he effectively broke their network connection to the domain server. Of course it was a 911 call to me. Found it quickly, but they were still charged for a one hour OnSite service call.

Interesting info. Based on painful and expensive years of experience, what I did not see in the video is what/how to document each and every step along the way so j.i.c. there is a problem the person knows what they did, in what sequence, they did what AND how to return to the machine to previous settings. Just in case there is a problem.

We are comparing the speed and respond time and ... of the fastest DNS servers from four corners of the country for quite a while and so far Google has had the highest average among all others.
