REVERSE PUSHUPS - Bodyweight Exercise For Building A BIGGER Back!

More Bodyweight Back Exercises: When it comes to bodyweight exercises for building a bigger back we often think that our only option is a pullup or some sort of inverted row or chinup. That said, the pullup alone will not help you to balance out an overdeveloped or tight chest or rounded shoulders. If you're going to do this you're going to need a bodyweight exercise that you can mimic the back row exercise that you can do anywhere! In this video I show you how to perform what I call the reverse pushup. This home bodyweight exercise is used to develop the mid back muscles and area between your shoulder blades. You would want to use this to counteract the tendency we have to get tight and have our shoulders pulled forward into bad posture. The great thing about bodyweight exercises is that you can use them to build a bigger back without having to have access to an elite gym or even a pullup bar in this case. Just find two benches or things that you can prop your elbows up on and get between and you can do the reverse pushup and start building a bigger back today

One other thing that I just want to put out there for all my fellow bodybuilding siblings from other mothers. I often do a variation of this exercise on a doorway pull-up bar that is halfway up. While similar, the only difference is that while having your elbows stationary is in essence like a reverse chest fly, the, -traditional, -reverse push-up is more the opposite of a regular push-up. Yes, I have seen it done using a broomstick between two chairs and I myself have done them on a racked weight bar.

Yeah, I am not sure about the man who made this video, anymore than the next guy but he is right about building up the muscles of the upper back and shoulder blades in order to compensate for heavy muscular development in the pectorals muscles. In essence, they are(the upper back and the chest) what are known as antagonistic pairs. They do not fight or anything like that but are each others polar opposite. One pulls the shoulders forward, the other back. A front lever is the isometric of this.

excellent video Jeff. Great advise about balancing the body. So many young bucks end up with shoulder problems from too much bench pressing and not enough upper back development. I bought a medical walker at Goodwill for 8 bucks and it works great for inverted rows and dips. It is also rated for 300 pounds! I use it during my lunch hour for those two exercises. It always makes for a good conversation piece sitting folded up in the corner of my office. Get one without wheels on the front.

for an individual that is already protracted slightly or severely, wouldn't this exercise activate the already overactive pec minor and anterior delt? I dont know about this exercise. plus, usually if someone has a bench they just might have a barbell. Either way, the exercise isnt really functional and they could just a use dumbbells to do lawn mowers. no dumbells? use a tool box with tools, or something else with a good grip and ideal weight.

-muizzizz well most peoples' anterior delt and pec minor are already overactive mean the muscle fibers are shortened. this exercise enables the already overactive muscles while your back musculature is lengthened during the eccentric movement. This just isnt functional. There's no real reason you'd want to do this exercise. you'd never do this movement in life so why in a workout?

just do reverse pushups much more healthier for shoulder joints than this -strain and hope for the best- approach and you get a free bicep workout as a bonus. been doing this for over 25yrs now. Started with my mums wooden mop! now use floor standing reverse pull up bars that can be put in the corner of the bed room out of the way. My rear shoulders look impressive with out juicing

Jeff, Consistently excellent. This is a great tip, terrific and simple idea, which are usually the best, for addressing this too common imbalance/weakness in so many athletes and physique. Very much appreciate your generous giving. Btw, you're looking GREAT, which should bring unbelievers into the fold. Thanks again, gene s.

I started doing these yesterday. Does wonders for the shoulders. If you don't have benches, just place yourself in between a pair of chairs. When you're starting out, it's definetly going to be challenging to even do ten of these. The advantage gained is that there is no internal rotation of the shoulders

Just purchase the actual athlean X. It is very cool. I really like body weight exercises. I have trained BJJ for more than a decade and even just having a few body weight exercises to do after training on the mat is really nice. Very convenient way to protect my body from breaking down. Really love it!

This is not a reverse push-up, this is called -Elbow Presses-.
Paul -Coach- Wade already decribed this excercise in his (highly recommended) book -Convict Conditioning- from 2010 (page 147) and he learnt it decades ago in prison, so it's not that revolutionary; )
But thanks for sharing, though.
