The Ultimate Ab Rollout Progression (BEGINNER TO ADVANCED)

The ab rollout exercise is one of the undisputed best ab exercises you can do to build core strength and six pack abs. That said, if you do it incorrectly you can quickly hurt yourself. This video shows you how to do an ab rollout using either an ab wheel, a physioball or a barbell. The proper progression between the variations of this ab exercise are also shown so you can adapt it to meet your current ability level. To start, you want to perform the ab rollouts from a physioball since it provides you with a higher elevation from the ground. The closer you get to parallel to the ground the more your body will have to fight the force of gravity. Your abs and core will work on overtime to try and resist the urge to cave in and crash to the ground. From this plank position you can begin by performing small circular movements like the physioball stirs, or more dynamic movements like the alphabet abs exercise demands. From there, you can attempt your first ab roll out rep making sure to stabilize your core throughout the movement. Once you've mastered the physioball version of this ab exercise you want to move onto the actual ab wheel. This piece of ab training equipment is still one of the absolute best ways to hit your abs. You perform the ab wheel rollouts first from your knees to be sure you've got enough ab strength to do it properly. Next you move up to the barbell rollout version of this exercise. The wheel effect is the same but you get the increased force of friction that you must overcome on the way back in. In the video I'm using three hundred and fifteen pounds and the abs have to work really hard to control the outward momentum and pull back in. Start by giving this ab rollout progression a try and when you're ready to take your six pack ab results to the next level, head to and get the complete pro athlete training system. Go from a zero pack to a 6 pack in the next 90 days with a professional athlete trainer coaching your every workout

Physics nerd here:
It's not friction you're overcoming with the barbell one, it's the momentum/inertia of the added weight.
Friction doesn't really come in here because you're not sliding the weights around (which is kinetic friction and the added weight would be a challenge on sliding in, but would help you not overextend sliding out,
you're rolling them which uses static friction and that's just how wheels work when they don't skid. The rolling friction part doesn't really add much difficulty here, it's the added mass. If the weights were just giant light wheels with rubberized tread you might be able to get more friction that a smooth metal heavy barbell. But if that wheel were light then it wouldn't be hard than the heavy barbell even though the force of friction could be the same.

How you doing Jeff?
I-m 65 years old and getting younger by the day.
10 years ago I had open heart surgery, six months ago I was on the border line of diabetes (too many donuts and biscuits with my coffee)
Well I started watching your videos and in the space of two months I can do the dragon flag and the standing ab wheel roll out amongst a whole
Lot of other exercises. My blood sugar has now returned to normal and I feel great.
I guess what I-m saying is, i know I take things to the max but it doesn-t matter what sort of shape someone is in and what illnesses they may have there is always something a person can do to improve fitness.
Oh! I now have a six pack.
Anyway a big big thank you Jeff!
Mike from the uk.

-ATHLEAN-X Any thoughts on using a resistance band around my waist (attached to a pull up bar above my head in the starting position) to assist on the roll out / in with the toes? I find quite easy to do a few dozen reps following your form advices, but too hard to do just 2 or 3 on the toes. It stress my lower back too much.
I tried with the band and seems like a nice intermediate/adaptation exercise and the plan was to lower the resistance of the band until I can do with proper form without any assistance / pain in the lower back.
My question is: Would the band around the waist the best method? Does it impact the exercise negatively in any way?

I think you can expand on the standing rollout. Full extension can be obtained with the arms extended and the body more or less parallel to the floor. Ross Enamait does a great demonstration of this version. He even goes further to doing one arm standing rollouts. Not trying to knock this video, which contains valuable information. Just expanding upon what was presented here and trying to help spread the knowledge pool relative to this family of exercises.

Is there a difference between a yoga ball and a physio ball? Also what size ball do you suggest to use? Lastly I recently ordered an ab roller that comes with 3 wheels and you can take some out. What do you think is the optimum amount to have? I know 3is more stable, but does it take away from the workout at all? Or vice versa does a single wheel roller become too strenuous? Thanks for the great video, just what I need to kick up my workout!

I have a question! I am a woman and when I do the ab roller it is hard on my arms! I do it from a knee position and stretch completely, I know that I am doing it correctly and that eventually my arms will get used to it. What muscle in my arm is so out of shape? It is not my triceps I am sure of that. Does anyone feel a pull in their arms? I don't even think that there is a muscle where it is pulling.

This Six pack abs guide -suza great plan- (Google it) is quite excessive guide. I think this book is very useful for people who really wants to slim down and have a six-pack abs at the same time. I almost shed 3 pounds weight with in Ten days. It-s very helpful to me, I-ve got 6 pack abs following this guide step by step. I myself strongly recommend the book.

Jeff, recently purchased Athlean zero and loving it. Picked up my first ab roller, and of course I was not too surprised that you were one step ahead of me and offered a wonderful progression for this product. I appreciate that I can count on you and thank you sincerely for all your efforts, which go above and beyond the cost of your products. Greg

Damn I wish I'd seen this three days ago! I was following an app workout that asked for weighted ab rollouts, I am a beginner to ab workouts and am now sore as hell after doing three sets of ten! I am going to give my abs a few days to recover then I am going to follow the instructions you just gave! Thank you!

No offense man, I really enjoy yor movies, but I think that your version of standing ab rollouts is incorrect; ) I mean that you are losing this control in your lower back the moment you go back to standing position. Don't u think that it's better to keep the -hollow body- position all the time?
