5 Exercises Every Man Over 40 Should Be Doing

Apply here to work with me 1 on 1: Not all exercises are created equal, especially as we get older. While popular mass-builders like the squat, bench, and deadlift are great, we don’t actually need to perform these exercises to maximize muscle growth. In fact, as I’ve gotten older, heavy squats and deadlifts started wearing me down hurting my joints, slowing recovery, and reducing my ability to build muscle. But once I shifted my focus to smarter, more joint-friendly movements, my results improvedmore muscle, less pain, and better longevity in the gym. And that’s exactly what I want to share in this video: the only 5 exercises you need to get jacked after 40! [MASS 40] FREE WORKOUT FOR MEN OVER 40 [COACHING] APPLY FOR OUR 1-ON-1 COACHING PROGRAM

I’m female but still like watching your vids and appreciate your advice. I walked into a gym for the first time at age 50. My kids were grown, I was 50 pounds overweight, constantly out of breath and now I finally had time for me. I few years later a gym bud said I should try powerlifting competitions. That sounded crazy and no way was I going to do it. But he handed me the papers, paid the fee and said I was all signed up. So I had to. Shockingly, I came in first with deadlift. Fast forward to last year 2024: age 71, 114’ weight class, Squat 170’ bench 85’ ( my bench has always sucked) and deadlift 280’. Unfortunately I missed my 3rd attempt 300’ which I’d achieved the year before. I say all this to encourage you dudes to keep lifting but be smart about it. Plus keeping a good diet.

Very much agreed. This is the best 5, I'll add kettlebell squat for those who don't have leg press. Also everyone should really ditch the King of ALL killer excercise which is the barbell back squat. Do not believe the pros. Barbell back squat is BAD for your spine, placing some very heavy weight on the traps via the spine is not recommended even to those 40 below. It's bad for the posture and spinal chord vertebrae in the long run. There's also a growing number of lifter's getting killed by accident. That's how dangerous barbell back squat is. I don't care if Ronnie (look at what happened to him now) or even Arnold does it. Barbell Back squat is BAD and should be avoided at all cost.

love the clean New Balances don't be using those ones for cutting grass
how about a re-starting routine. I've been lazy and off the gym for a few years if I try and jump back into a normal gym cycle I'm just going to not be able to move the next day for the next month and every joint is going to die long before i actually wear out my strength and it will make me quit. it would be great to have something that encourages you and hits those vanity muscles we all want while rebuilding all those support joints and muscles. the temptation to go out there and just start trying to rip PBs for that testerone/dopamine hit is strong

I like the list especially the middle. Don’t love standing row variations as they lack stability and thus overload is better on other lifts but good to incorporate now and again. Also I like to neglect front and rear delts as these are often hit with other movements so if you focus on them they end up being over worked. Overhead press used to be associated with mid delts but studies shows it is really hitting front delts.

This was good. However, for legs, although the leg press is safe it can be misused. Also there are effective alternatives such as the Goblet squat, split squats, Bulgarian Split, and various forms of lunges. Although the split squats and lunges are more technical they can be learned and they benefit the hips along with the entire lower body. Perhaps they weren't mentioned because they are too technical

I'm 50 years old
I know I can do all of these
Now not saying I can do alot of them
I need this. Not healthy Have so much visceral fat on my stomach right now.
6'1 and I float between 220 and 240. I would like to stay under 210. I can't even go upstairs without dying. If there's anything else you can recommend to get rid of this belly it would be greatly appreciated

MM, another great video for us older guys. Curious about your recommendation for the Pendlay Row; an excellent movement. I've switched to the seal row, where I pick up the barbell from an elevated bench, laying face down. Maybe the SR is more isolated a movement) but it also saves the lower back. Any thoughts on this option p. s. RDLs are AWESOME.

Turned 40 3 months ago and still in shape but i finaly understood that time is running out and I cant lift like I was lifting 10-15 years ago. The time to regenrate now is insane, after hard legs day I need full week of recovery when at 25 I could run a marathon the day after. damn

For anyone wondering if it is worth it or not to sign up for their one on one training, the answer is ABSOLUTELY! I have been working with MM for a while now and I can honestly say that at 50 I have the best physique of my life. The change has been unbelievable.

disagree about leg press machine! the machine moving your legs straight across is excellent but the leg press machine where your moving upward can cause lower back pain if your not seated perfectly. as a body builder this has been mine and others i know opinion
reply

It's interesting how other as knowledgeable PT's, such as Jeff Cavaliere, instead discourage the use of the leg press machine and encourage to always include the traditional deadlifts.
I gather that this is not a science and it really depends on each individual.

You guys consistently give this 65 year old safe training advice. After 50 years of training, I need to train smarter. Have a powertec leverage machine that let's me train safely. Keep up the great work guys! Appreciated!

All great explanations on each of these lifts. Wondering if you would have sets of exercises that focus on home gyms, for example a mega bench with barbells and dumbbells, cable attachment etc
reply

Everyone’s focused on quick fixes, but the book You Are Stronger Than You Think from Cryptic Lore breaks down natural testosterone boosting the way it should’ve been taught from the start.

Great video as always but I have to disagree with legs the leg press hurts my knees and squats don't even when I go heavy on squats my knees are fine I will deffo try smith machine for delts
reply

Always enjoy your videos. 50, 5 years lifting. My program is based on one i got here. Personally amd fine with continuing to squat and deadlift and bent over row. Been slow steady improvement.

Hi! TOp the video! However, I don't understand why, if the incline press works the same muscles as the bench press, you can pick up significantly less weight on the incline
reply

Great video, precise and clear. I'm actually close to this actual workout already so it gives me even more confidence in my gym sessions. Thanks for the video.

Bro you’re videos are cool but the way you’re talking on the videos is getting old. It’s catchy for new listeners, but now it sound gimmicky.
