Whether you-re stuck at home or simply prefer training from the comfort of your own living room, home workouts can be a viable way to build muscle. It-s important to note, however, that training with your own bodyweight is very similar to working out with lighter loads. It can definitely work, but only if you train hard enough. One review published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, looked at 21 studies comparing training with heavy vs light weight. They concluded that although maximal strength benefits were obtained from the use of heavy loads, muscle hypertrophy can be equally achieved across a spectrum of loading ranges. However, light weights, like using body weight in our case, are only as effective when you take sets to complete failure. If you-re performing pushups and stop prematurely, you may break a sweat. But that doesn-t mean you-re providing a big enough stimulus to build new muscle tissue. So remember, it-s a good idea to take sets very close to or all the way to failure when training with bodyweight, especially when doing sets of over 30 reps. And of course, you have to focus on the right movements that-ll give you the most results to build a balanced physique. Go buy a couple of buckets and a length of steel gas piping. You can fill the buckets with different items (dirt, rocks, books, can goods, etc) to alter the weight. Buckets can be used individually for most muscle groups as well as hooking the buckets on the bar for more weight. Plus, the swaying buckets also help stabilization muscles.
