WHY THE SMALL SCUBA TANK IS A SCAM - Christian Wedoy
video description
To be able to use one of these mini tanks you need to be acquainted with the dangers involved in using compressed air underwater. These dangers include the need to breath out as you proceed to the surface to prevent the expanding gas in the lungs from bursting the lungs and killing you before you ever reach the surface.
I repeat, DO NOT USE THESE MINI CYLINDERS UNTIL YOU HAVE GAINED A CERTIFIED DIVER QUALIFICATION. The two main training organisations are BSAC which is a non commercial organisation and in my opinion gives the best level of amateur status dive training and PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) which is more aligned to professional diving. It is also the organisation that runs most dive training in the holiday industry areas.

Way back in the day, the -glorified drivers- helo crews who would -try to murder us by a combination of gravity and the scenery- fly us around in the battle taxi's used to have something very similar to this. It looked like a pepsi can painted silver with a gumshield stuck on top, which was fixed to the chest of their immersion suits for flying over water. They were called STASS bottles, Short Term Air Supply System.
For a long time I had a chip on my shoulder about how they got oxygen tanks and diving suits _(I was a few decades younger and a couple orders of magnitude dumber at the time, cut me some slack)_ whilst we had to fend for ourselves as it were. Right up until a particular Lt casually explained that having a STASS bottle - in real time, rather than in the textbook - just lets you choose between dying in the cockpit and your body sinking with the helo never to be seen again, or dying outside the cockpit, floating up and bobbing around on the surface like a dickhead for a bit, and then sinking anyway. After that I wasn't _quite_ so precious about it.

While I understand the concerns, and how they can be gimmicks, you also addressed your own concern about how to pump it up more conveniently. Just bring a bigger tank to fill it up with, or an air compressor. I can also agree with some of the comments below that state concerns about not labeling. I think the concerns and uses should be listed on the can.
Also, I wouldn't claim that everyone using these are somehow retarded or something. I probably would not use this for going any deeper than 15 feet or so. I'd just use this for more surface swimming. That's what this should be intended for. And in my case I wouldn't be breathing like normal like when I'm above water. I'll take much smaller and slower breaths. That would allow longer time to swim.
So, to address this just use this for swimming in shallower water, use a tank or compressor to fill it, and minimizing breathing, and would seem much better than what you said.

If you aren't scuba certified, don't dare use this. Note that this guy is using real scuba equipment it seems. Using this stuff without the knowledge required could easily get you killed. If you are scuba certified, you will know there are options for emergency air from respected scuba companies. Heed the other warnings in this comments section. Do not use this. It is very dangerous to breath compressed air under water if you do not know what you are doing. You could literally over expand your lungs with very little effort. Pulmonary embolisms kill people.

The thing about scuba divers is that they like to act as if they are so smart & sophisticated & everybody else is sn amateur. Yes i have my PADI license too & yes i know of the dangers of ascending too rapidly, so non-divers should do a bit of research before using this but STOP the excessive fear mongering. In short, remember to pause at periodic intervals as you ascend from the deep. Don't shoot straight up like a rocket. There are charts that tell you exact numbers.

I have a comercial property pool, and the inspector force me to change the grate at the deep bottom drain. This device is the best That I have found to do the task. Lets say you need to clean the boat hull from dirt or the propeler has a fishing net or a line net. Lets say that I have to screw the metalic steps of my swimming pool. This device is perfect. Of course is not to dive as if you are doing it with a regular tank, but is perfect for other tasks.

First burn the mask from the inside with a lighter, than wash and before diving spit on the glass from the inside and wash again. Now you will not have problems with the foggy glass, you can also use a yellow sponge you can find while diving to clean it. Light the glass only once till it become black, that means the plastic cover inside burnt, it should not be there and ofc i mean the glass not the gum that wraps your face.

I remember hearing about these in the Whitewater kayaker community. There was some debate about whether they might help someone who ended up pinned under an undercut rock or pulled into a nasty hydraulic. There was an a lot of consensus as to whether it could really be helpful in that kind of chaotic situation. Id be curious if there are any white water kayakers out there who keep one on their vest.

Lets also mention the huge risk of a Pulmonary Over Inflation Syndrome (POIS, an Arterial Gas Embolism, Tension Pneumothorax, Drowning, and ultimately the death of the people these companies market to (naive and uncertified divers. Its sad that its inevitable someone will die due to a lack of knowledge of diving physics/physiology just so a company can make a few bucks. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

What if you use this just to extend your free dive a breath or two longer or to eliminate the blackout syndrome associated with free diving even with experienced free divers. That is when you free dive and run out of your surface breath you can use this device on the way up? These questions come for a real quest for safety and are not gottcha questions.

I would agree. A. 5li cylinder at 200b on the surface will not give 10 mins. This would require a breathing rate of 10li/min and you would need to be almost stationary. Very very very few people could achieve that. You'd need to be an exceptional athlete. I could do 14 li/min on a drift/very gentle swim and I was a military bomb disposal diver.

It is actually possible pump up a tank like this to 2500psi. I personally have a three stage hand pump for pumping up a psp air rifle. It can go up to 3500psi but I never take it that high. It does use a different type of quick connector because a standard bike shrader valve would probably blow out at around 300 or 400 psi.

No this was not designed to be a back up for scuba!
It was designed for helicopter crews who ditch in water and can't leave the craft till the rotors stop. So they are only about 10' down, not a dive.
Try bringing a Spare Air on a dive that requires a back up air source and you'll be laughed off the boat

Honestly the marketing is just weird. From what I understand if you have like 2 or 3, of these and a compressor it can be great fun for someone who wants to try diving but not really commit. Freediving can be scary for the absolute beginner so I do understand the appeal. Why not market it this way is beyond me

I think this would be a fantastic tool for the big wave surfing community! Big wave hold downs can be very scary and severe especially when you are disorientated and dont know which way is up. Knowing you have some spare oxygen is going to help keep you calm tilll you are able to reach the surface.
