Thank you so much for this video. For years, I though something was wrong with me and I tried to do it the way people kept telling me I should. I now have chronic knee pain.
I have longer femurs and and a short torso. I know my ankle mobility is suspect at best, however once I start to squat down, I ha e to lean forward and my feet turn outwards. I can-t help this. I actually thought of stop squatting all together, because I thought that fact that I couldn-t get the perfect form was causing my knee pain

This is so well explained and laid out. My knee caps naturally turn in so I find I need to turn my feet out and wider stance, it is hard to not have them roll in slightly even with resistance band. I do find I've been getting knee pain and discomfort in low back as I'm doing a 30 day challenge so there has been a lot of squats and lunges. What main cues would you suggest? Driving weight into heels? I think trying to keep upright is what bugs my upper back. Thank you for all your open minded knowledge!

Amen!
Glad you uploaded this.
I'm definitely not an ideal build (look like a Hobbit) but have always enjoyed squats - not leg extensions or leg presses.
Never understood those who's knees were wobbling and/or caving in when squating, telling me -
-Dude! You got bad form-
-Look. my legs are growing, so I'm doing it right-
Especially enjoyed your part as the gym person taking selfies while -working out-.
Thanks and have a good one.

Great video, thank you! Even though I have long torso and shorter legs/arms, a good looking squat is hard for me to achieve. I have knee injuries and upper thoracic/cervical problems, as well as S-I joint instability and am often told I-m not stranding upright enough. I-ve noticed a slightly wider stance works better on my knees and back.
Thank you for this excellent explanation!

Oh thank the lord I came across this video. I tried explaining these very aspects to a trainer and the comeback was the typical. it hurts cause you aren't doing it right. But, I knew it hurts because I'm not built A-typical, meaning, I have scoliosis, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and one leg shorter than the other, so, I need to do squats differently. and I am right.

Just a little add on:
NOT everyone can back squat with a barbell to depth due to their anthropometry.
Don't be afraid to try different variations. The more in front the weight is, the more upright you can stay. So front squats, zercher squats, hip belt squats, bearhug squats, and so on are just as legitimate as back squats. Use them if you're better suited for them.

I used to take -sitting through your hips- to the extreme. My knees did not travel forward at all like in a deadlift. The result was that I was limited by the strength of my lower back while my quads remained relatively weak. It took me breaking my elbow and relearning all movements again to rediscover the squat and fix my old habits.

No matter how many different methods I have used when doing squats my sciatic nerve acts up which results in days and sometimes weeks of down time. I've discovered that I have DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease) and that doing certain exercises are just not good for my body.

Thankyou for the sharing. I notice you have a slight butt-wink (esp on the 2nd rep. would love to hear your thoughts on this, as you have such a good handle on movement mechanics and so good at explaining! (another video)

I actually stopped using a trainer because if I did the -proper- squat I was in pain. I do not have any back problems so I couldn-t understand why I could not do squats. I have very long legs. Now I know! Thank you.
