Oh, Lucy, I'm so sorry to hear that you've been struggling mentally with the decision over whether or not to have back surgery. :( That's understandably extremely difficult. I chatted with my boyfriend about this -- and I showed him your video -- because he's a physical therapist who has worked with many post-op patients, and he's actually done a lot of reading on disc bulge research in particular.
Here are his thoughts:
1) He absolutely agrees with your osteopath. Since you have been recovering well, there is no need for surgery.
2) You have an incredibly common disc bulge. The research he has read says that disc bulges often fix themselves, and the body can reabsorb them in 6-18 months. And interestingly, the worse the bulge, the more frequently the body will reabsorb them. The bulge seems to kick off an immune response.
3) In his experience, cervical and back surgery patients have the most variability in terms of outcome. He has seen patients who rave about their surgery. but he equally sees many patients who are worse off after surgery. So please, if you are okay and recovering. wait.
4) He's honestly kind of unhappy with how you described your doctor's conversation with you. To him, it sounds like maybe your doctor is just trying to push surgery. It bothered him to hear how much this has affected your well-being over the past couple weeks! :(
My bf caveats all this by acknowledging he knows nothing about the specifics of your condition. But he HAS seen hundreds of patients in his career, and your story sounded very familiar to him. He and I wish you the absolute best of luck and send you a lot of love!

saw the Kmart longboard in the -How to start. for beginners- and wondered if you used it for any part of a workout?
If you're going to use it for commuting, then longboards are better than (popsicle) skateboards: safer, easier to go longer distances etc i'd suggest something a double-drop, like an Ember or Pranayama from Pantheon, these are shorter than a regular skateboards too.
Anyway just interesting seeing it, i was fed to your beginner video from watching a Hybrid Calisthenics one, but coudnt stop tyring to work out what the longboard was. Ride safe!

I love your kitty! Shes beautiful! I have done calisthenics and yoga throughout my life from about age 10, and I am sure I have that to thank for the fact that at age 62 I still have a figure. Its been the kind of exercise I can keep up doing regularly, and its amazing how much local furniture can be made into equipment, at no extra cost. The backs of two solid chairs make excellent parallel bars for leg raise and L sits. A broom stick across two chairs for lying down pull ups. security gate for hanging leg raises.

I had the surgery 2 months ago and for me it was the best thing as i could no longer walk and or drive and nothing had budged at all so surgery after 6 months of being stuck at home ( miserable. My toes also started going numb. I tried everything to not have the surgery but my slipped disk was so far out and completely compressing my sciatic nerve. Am slowly getting back into sport but stretching is sooo helpful- I do about 1 hour of it ( 2 mins minimum each exercise.

I broke my back in first grade. As a result, I have several herniated disks at 23 years old. It has resulted in severe nerve pain, and I have not had a pain free day since high school. I would be interested in seeing a video on back injuries and exercises/stretches that might help with that. I was going to PT and was given four exercises to do before I was told I had -graduated- PT, so I am kind of on my own for finding things that help.

Since I'm early, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your content, Lucy! Im in the middle of my fitness journey, and I found out about calisthenics about a month ago. I had no clue where to start since all i saw was just a bunch of ripped dudes doing amazing things a beginner like me couldnt do- but thanks to your vids ive found a much softer and relatable aproach to it, and Ive already found myself getting stronger! Thank you! -

That-s a really helpful video. Takes a lot of the -gear anxiety- off. Thx. I now know what kind of pull-up bar setup you-re using, which helps. I-m curious though if you see any point in buying a Rogue squat rack purely for calisthenic use. Would it make a huge difference in terms of stability?

Thank you so much for all the content you produce and the things you share, Lucy! It has honestly been the first time that I've felt that I can lose weight/gain health. So glad I've found your corner of the internet!
