Another thing to see in Frankfurt is the Kaisersaal in the Roemer. It is essentially a rogues gallery of the emperors and king of the Holy Roman Empire with pictures of all the monarchs from Charlemagne to Franz II (1792-1806. In 1806 the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved by Napolean. On my first trip to Frankfurt a visit to the Kaisersaal got me interested in German history. For all you book fans don't forget the Book Fair(Buchmesse) in October.
Some day trips you can make from Frankfurt are to Mainz and Gelnhausen. Mainz has a romanesque cathedral. In Gelnhausen are the ruins of the castle built by the Hohenstaufen Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa(Red Beard) reigned from 1152-1190.

Just two small side notes from a local:
1) The houses behind you (not the cathedral, but the row of houses) is WAY younger than one might think. These houses were built in the '80s. _19_80s that is. Really. ;-)
2) The area between these houses and the cathedral is currently being transformed into a replica of what used to be there before WW2. So there will be more small old-ish houses very soon.

Perhaps a few more shots of places mentioned. From all I've read, Frankfurt's just an airport stop on the way to any number of amazing places to visit in Germany.
