I have family living in Shanghai and I think that really enhances the experience every time I go back because there is always something to see, do and EAT!
I take advantage of the really cheap massages, facials and hair treatments you can get and it is great that many open up till 10 PM at night. I really recommend people checking out the 24/7 spas we have in Shanghai, it is something the younger generations do to hang out with each other. Also the beautiful lavish restaurants that are 5 floors and themed (Maison De L'Hui, Golden restaurant and a restaurant that has a bridge indoors with aquarium underneath your feet. Just an example of the dining scene in Shanghai.

One thing you also need to watch out for is that not all hotels will accept foreigners; you can't stay in less then 4 star hotel. I first thought it to be a cultural xenophobia, but according to my in-laws who are Chinese and have lived in Shanghai all their lives, it's a business tactic to ensure more revenue from tourists. That being said, Shanghai is an international city, so what are 4 star hotels there are often the North American standards, ie: Holiday Inn, Marriott, etc.

I just came back from Shanghai yesterday and it was amazing. I noticed everything you mentioned but there is one other thing I really disliked:
Since Im black, everyone stared at me and my family and they took pictures of us without our consent. You said that no one took pictures because they see a lot of westerners but in my case, is was like I was a celebrity. Im just saying, that is something that some people might have to worry out when you go

Bothered by the heat?
Eat another roasted suckling pig; add another pound; be bothered even more; for sure!
Also: it's not important (rather logic) that Shanghai is more expensive than rural China, it's important that, to ones taste, you got
reasonable value for your money.
In that perspective: e. g. compare Shanghai with New York; you will compare the well priced future with the insanely overpriced stone age!

Here is my question: why one of the items on your hate list about Shanghai is very little Old China? Shanghai is a big city, so of course it is modernized like any other big cities like Hong Kong, San Francisco, etc. If youre looking for places that preserve it ancient/historical landscapes, you can go Hunan, Suzhou or Hangzhou?

Your street/urban IQ needs to be on its highest alert in Shanghai. Im from Shanghai, and unless they know youre a local, they will try to rip you off. Other than that, crowding is insane. Weather, insanely hot summer and freezing winters.

Thanks for your review but hell will freeze over before I go to that god forsaken place! Look at the large number of rude people who know you are trying to do a vlog but they get in the way of your camera shots. Arsholes!

Im Shanghaiese. With regards to soup dumplings (xiao long bao) please dont use straw. The correct way is to take a bite, suck the soup then eat it (with vinegar if you like.
