Having lived in Costa Rica you should be aware that if using US dollar bills they will not accept ANY that have marks on them or even the slightest tear. Any US dollars we used, were new from banks only. In addition, I noticed you talk about how everyone speaks English. In the Jaco area, you will have younger people that have learned the basics. Otherwise, unless a hotel or store is owned by an American, English throughout the Country, is not widely spoken. If you plan to do anything off the beaten tourist path, which I HIGHLY recommend to experience the true Costa Rica, you better learn some Spanish!

Sadly, South America seems like a waste of money to me. It's all the same.
I'd much rather stay within Europe as there's simply more to see and do within a much smaller area.
This is one of the perks of living in Europe.
Cheap flights to neighbouring countries that are totally different to each other.
If I had no choice but to visit South America, I'd choose the Amazon before it's all gone.

UPDATE MAY 2018: Banks and most business will NOT accept $50 or $100 bills, due to the high exchange rate and their need to give you change. Also, be sure your dollars are unblemished and have NO tears. Any bills with writing, tears, or that are overly worn will NOT be accepted!

Avoid 50000 colones bill. many places don't accept them because is a really big bill and if it lost they lost a lot of money.
Many people only use them when they need to pay a lot of money (like pay their credit card or pay in banks.

How is the food? I have been told that it is relatively bland. Sort of about the spice level of traditionally american food as made by midwestern white people. Boring. I like a bit more spice.

Mark I have always wondered if you have dual citizenship or are you just an American citizen. Also, from all the places you've visted do you have a set city or country that you plan to retire to?

Costa Rica is great, but I thoroughly enjoyed Nicaragua! It's like how Costa Rica used to be 20 years ago. Same scenery, but still super low key and authentic, and so much cheaper

Is the money relevant to the price of things? I. e. a coke is 2. 50 in the states. Is the price of a coke 3000 costa Rica money?
