My friend and I got pickpocketed on a tram in Barcelona. They work in pairs. While one is jostling you, the other goes into your pockets. They zipped open my shoulder bag, which for this very purpose kept our toiletries. They did get about $20 out of my friends pocket. We were just trying to hold our balance and not get pushed down. Our money and passports were safe in our money belts. They jumped off as soon as the doors open. They knew the timing. The next day I saw the same guys on the tram going back and started shouting at them. They immediately got off the tram. We were smart and still got made, but luckily for only $20. We heard from an elderly couple in Paris a group of small children jumped them and got from his pocket his wallet with everything. He said with 4 children climbing on you, he couldnt do anything.

thieves will come into your room while you are sleeping, i had it happen, they pick old hotels that have manual locking doors, we were on the 4 th floor and did not expect anyone would be check the door a 5 AM i hear a tiny noise look up and a theif is stealing my wife purse i run after the bastard naked, dive for his leg wrestle the purse away and then chase him more, dow a fight of steps, we box(a young fast guy) me naked i land a few and he slips away after he wrapped me on the ear with his shoe he was carrying his shoes to be quiet i guess, he dropped his camel cigarettes, i still have them. an old lady sees me naked with a big (&)&( and screams, i can't help i have a huge (&( that story got more fame. that happened at the hotel porto portugal a few yrs ago. make sure you lock your door!

When walking towards my school I've found interesting ways, how to use your enviroment to your advantage (but I've never been tried to be pickpocketed, so I'm not sure about their effectiveness):
1) My route to school is set up in that way, that in the morning I always have sun behind me, so shadow of potential pickpocket can warn me.
2) Since I go through city centre to my school there are quite a lot of shop windows, that give enough reflection to clearly see what's behind me and my head.

Train station kiosks for sure in my experience. Both in Rome and Zurich had people ask for help and when I said sorry I can't help they disappeared and both times my back pack was unzipped after. Luckily nothing was taken either time, I believe they open is as they ask their can you help me question planning to go through it after you accept. When you say no they just bolt. Lesson learned is to turn your backpack around while at the kiosk and watch around don't put all your focus on the screen.

I live in New York City. When you exit the airport here people who are not real taxi drivers will try to grab your luggage without your permission so they can drive you to your hotel for money of course. But they are not authorized by the city to be taxi drivers and you might be getting into a strangers car so make sure they are real taxi drivers authorized by the city to take you from the airport.

Choice of bag also helps in this situation. Like a lot of people have been saying, a fanny pack is smart and safe. I have a shoulder bag with a long flap that hangs over the zipper and I always carry it flap towards my body in public so it would very difficult for a passerby to reach into my bag.
The cutting method is crazy though. And its scary these people work in teams.

What about walking around with a camera, all tourists have them, should I get a compact camera that can fit in my pocket or something, or get a dslr/bridge type which pretty much seems to me everyone can see clearly when you carry one of those? (I'm not taking super fancy or expensive, but I do like to take nice pictures.

I sew small braided steel cable into all of my straps. Camera, camera bag, ect. Somebody tries to cut it off. well, they can't. Which gives me enough time to defend myself. Happened in NYC one time. I suspected a guy was gonna make his move, so I baited him. When he did make his move I cold cocked him. Down he went.

A friend of mine went on a bus tour in the British Isles several years ago. While in London, shopping, some woman tried to pickpocket her. well, she picked the wrong person to try it on. The pickpocket's daughter tried to distract my friend while the pickpocket had her hand in my friend's bag. BIG MISTAKE.

I always put my ID, credit cards and lots of cash in a neck pouch. I guess it's almost impossible to get it there.
It makes no sense that people will come out of the blue to help me, especially if it's a woman so I always get away from them.
