Dude lol. that's like saying compton is not that bad like what people make it. Just don't bring your iphone, carry small amounts of cash, be vigilent, and stay away from groups of people. You'll be fine.
GROW UP. THERE ARE REASONS WHY YOU HEAR NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT CERTIAN PLACES.
Of course, every place is different, so some places are helluva better place to be safety wise than others. I don't compare compton to malibu when it comes to tourism. Don't bs people, tell them the truth and let them make the decision to go and how to take care of themselves.

I get really scared when I read the comments. Im going to Rio in February for a week and we are ONLY going to stay in tourist areas and do guided tours, but I keep reading about how dangerous it is in the comments and it scares me. Im from the US and I really want to see Brazil. Its my top destination of choice, but it scares me reading some of these comments and I feel like Im making a mistake. ESP when I see local brazilians saying to not go to Rio

Rio, where the police runs from the bandits; where the thief leaves the police station before you do if you get robbed; where thieves close the main avenues and rob everyone around; where thieves rob other thieves; where people who don't leave in the touristic bubble area are afraid to leave their homes at night, even by car, where bandits shoot down a police helicopter. but it is just like any other city in the world.

Rio De Janeiro does get bad press. But trust me I live in another dangerous tourist city called Cape Town and a lot of people here live in denial about the crime. But yes I would also not go to the beach at night here in Cape Town. So to be honest no Rio does not seem safe. The advice is similar to what I would give to Cape Town.

Don't show any wealth
Avoid any irrelevant areas to tourism at best
When at the beach always guard your valuables
Avoid the policia militar, if confronted by them simply show them your passport
Most important of all: learn portuguese because hardly anyone can speak English there

Who would want to go to the beach if there is a high risk of getting robbed? I live at the beach in the US and we pick up the trash and people leaves stuff unattended all the time and people watch and make sure no one steals anything. Like I dont get how people could go to rio.

No it is not as bad as they say on tv. IT IS WORST. This man is a idiot. I lived in Brazil for 15 years with a loaded gun 24-7 with me. It does not matter where you go in Brazil it is a russian roulette. If you plan on going there MAKE A WILL BEFORE YOU GO. JUST IN CASE.

sounds nearly impossible to take pictures (with camera) on the beach or probably anywhwere in RJ without risking being robbed? maybe even risky when taking with a smart phone? that'd be a great shame because it's such a picturesque place.
