1. Our new voicemail system at work disables the ability for someone to leave a message when the temporary absence/out of office message is engaged. This prevents people who normally pound past your announcement from leaving multiple messages and getting annoyed you haven't called back. They can't bypass the outgoing message when this function is on. See if your office system has this. It's awesome.
2. If you are responsible for some item(s) that are normally kept under lock and key make sure someone else ( who will actually be in the office) has access as well.
3. Finally, if someone else is going to be out on vacation offer to cover for them. They will be more likely to return the favor down the road.

speaking of household mail, here's a tip that I got from my mailman: tell him you're going to need a yellow vacation card -- he gives it to you, you fill in when you're leaving and when you're returning, and they will deliver all your mail to your house the day you are returning! you don't even have to go to the Post Office for this! I used to have family come over to take care of my mail while I was gone but now the yellow vacation card from the mailman does it all for me.

Buffer day is a good thing, but I prefer it to be a work day, so return like saturday or sunday and still have vacation on monday. Yes it costs a day of vacation, but:
1) you can adjust to the normal Life
2) you can do practical things like cleaning up and Go Shopping (Shops in Germany are closed on sundays)
3) most important: you reduce the days before your next free time (weekend) so you might stay relaxed a Bit longer

1: Write a checklist of items that you need on trip so packing will be done properly.
2: A checklist of things to do when getting home.
3: Empty the fridge of perishables.
4: Water plants and take out all trash.
5: Pull out plugs on electronics in case of lightning, fire hazard and reduce electrical usage.
6: Quick security check of house/apartment. Check if windows and doors ale closed.

I would also recommend a buffer day or afternoon before you leave for your trip. Getting home and having 6 or 8 business hours to call people you have forgotten to get in touch with, errands you needed to run or whatever; this has been super helpful. If everything has gone well then you just have a day to prepare your head and heart for travels.

My first week back from vacation is usually spent thinking about what I was doing at this same time last week, I'd be like oh last week at this exact time I was watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace or I was walking around the Bellagio in Vegas or I was at the flower market in Amsterdam

How cool Mark! I'll be in Rome next week. the cool thing about my job is that I'm an auditor and I did my last in person audit in Sweden last week and my schedule is pretty flexible. by the way, I booked the Rome walks twilight Tour. Have you and your family been on that one? Thanks for video as always Mark.

I always took a buffer week just to reflect on my trip and get everything at home back in order, and then I was good to go. But, I planned for that extra week and it really helped tremendously. And like the one commenter stated, at least a buffer day before the trip helps a lot. Thanks for the video!

I always clean before I go on holiday: )
It's annoying to pack and be about to leave then remember that there's a mug in the sink but I never want to see what would happen to that mug when I get back!
