I had a very bad experience in Germany I heard people talking about me in German not knowing that I could speak German as an American so I would disrespect them back and call them Nazis waving goodbye with a zig heil salute. I realize it was immature to do and that not all Germans agree with national socialism but as an American it's green in My DNA not to let somebody use me as a punching bag without giving them the death blow

A lot of the larger towns were bombed into the Stone Age during ww2 and were rebuilt ( most Germans cant afford to use wood) wood is an scarce resource and extremely expensive to build with, which is why the generally the older towns( that werent destroyed) have the half timbered homes many of of these style houses are several hundred years old and those towns have been there for centuries

My hostsister (she is from South Africa) always says, You know why your spotted as German all over the world? Your the only people stopping at a red traffic light and just wait till green, also there is no car anywhere around. And I think it is so true, but I love that.
As I'd been to South Africa last time, I'd been asked if I'm German, because I stopped at a red traffic light.

Thank you. As a German I think your advice is spot on. Don't confuse Germany and Bavaria. Your last point about modern Germany and half-timbered houses was great. It just winds me up when Americans think we run around in Lederhosen and drink beer all day. Just as America is a diverse country with different accents, customs, traditions and local food specialities, so is Germany.

Concerning the shoes: some people don't mind (not me, I hate it if people don't take their shoes off: D. If you want to be safe, just start pulling off your shoes. If the host doesn't mind you wearing them, they will say so and you can leave them on. If they mind they will stay silent so you just take them off.

If you like hiking, I recommend you to do that in Germany. We have so many beautiful hiking trails over houndreds of kilometers, for example in the Mosel region, in the Sauerland, at the border to the Czech Republic (which crosses the border as well, and so on! Have a nice stay: )

You could add the fact that when ordering water in a restaurant oder at someone's home you're usually served sparkling water. So you'll have to say that you'd like to have a stilles Wasser if you don't like sparkling water

Rule 11 don't fall foul of the quiet times which can vary locally. But usually 1 til 2 pm in the afternoon and 10pm til 7am in the week and all day Sunday. Stiff fines which can Include cutting the grass and playing loud music.

I see tons of Germans jaywalking LOL So, not sure if that rules is applicable. And I never pay tip lol I always thought that is only for America. In my country, tipping is always optional.

LOL your not wrong about the thing with the streetlights The one defense I have for that: we mostly get mad when kids watch you do it.
