I was staying in a hotel (I won't name it for reasons that will become obvious: I don't want to be facing a law suit.
It was the last 4 days of a month long trip to the UK & Western Europe.
I had 300quid left over from the UK, that I'd forgotten to cash out before leaving.
I left it in my hotel room, while taking a day tour of local sights.
Came back to the hotel & couldn't find the cash, or my spare debit card, anywhere.
I've been telling people about this ever since, telling them not to go to that hotel.
4 years later, I open my first aid kit for the first time since then and out falls a roll of British banknotes. Oops.
Last week, Starting to plan my next tour of Europe, I checked my passport and there in the middle of the book was the spare debit card!
I'd deliberately hidden the cash & card in places I thought no-one would look for them, (+ I was carrying both with me) and I was right. No-one, not even me!

Some say to make sure that you have a ring on your phone to keep people from pulling it out of your hand, others say don't do that because you'll get dragged. I use a ring. I do keep it tucked away most of the time but if you're using GPS, you need to keep it out and of course taking pictures. Another thing is. don't carry so much stuff. You don't need a backpack and a purse. Don't carry your whole wallet, put your cards and cash in a baggie. When I lived in Istanbul, some friends came visiting. I lived in the city. Far away from Sultanahmet but not so far that we weren't going to be home by supper time. They each had a big backpacker's backpack with spare shoes, each had a huge bottle of water, about 4 travel guides and maps. Their bags were so full that they couldn't shove their shopping in there.

Avoid anywhere that looks dodgy. Groups of young men hanging around the streets are usually a bad sign. I took a wrong turning in Panama City. nothing happened as i just retraced my steps but it was scary for a few minutes. Remember in some places it can go from touristy to dodgy in 2 minutes. Try to at least look like you know where you are. If you need to look at a map, sit down in a cafe or something, keeping your bag hooked around your leg and look. stopping on the streets is asking for it. Be careful getting drunk with locals, in some places they will either set you up or drug your drink. Also remember that the overwhelming majority of people are good people. Dont be paranoid but be careful

If you can, try to find an ATM thats inside, so you can stash your cash before you go back outside. Even in the US, when I used to go out in New Orleans and spend a lot of cash at bars, I would always stash a $20 back in the hotel or apartment where I was staying so I would have enough money for breakfast the next day. Drunk me cant be trusted to save for the next day.

Tip for traveling: get one of these small bags you can carry under your shurt, that's big enough to carry your passport, spare wallet and documents. Carry smaller sums of money in your main wallet, so that if it gets stolen, the demage is minimal. And Alllways be self aware.
Also, sometime it's better to let stuff go then to get into more trouble.

I was drinking beer with some local Mexicans in Tijuana in a night club. They told me they were leaving to go to a much cooler place. They said please come with us. I left with them. Once we got to a dark place, one them took out a knife and demanded my wallet. They took my wallet and my leather jacket. I'm a fool, but I'm still alive.

What about walking around with a camera, all tourists have them, should I get a compact camera that can fit in my pocket or something, or get a dslr/bridge type which pretty much seems to me everyone can see clearly when you carry one of those? (I'm not taking super fancy or expensive, but I do like to take nice pictures.

I agree with not wearing much jewellery. But I do NOT agree with not dressing nicely. I cannot stand all these tourists dressing over-casual, too revealing ( fat people in short. In my opinion I show respect to my host country by dressing as the natives dress when they enjoy a day town.

It takes a lot of the fun out of your trip if you constantly worry about being robbed and is constantly on alert. My best advice is when you go out, carry your phone, keys and your wallet only, get a pair of zip pocket shorts and just zip those things up in your pocket and forget about it.
