Valdagno, Italy - Why I Love Exploring Italy - Wolters World timmmahhhh: I agree one should definitely see a small town but a shock to remember is that you will probably find nobody who speaks English. Don't let that be a deterrent just know. In April 1988 we stayed in Arezzo for two weeks and the only English speaking person I ran into was an English teacher in a bookstore. We architecture students explored area hilltowns and I went to Citta di Castillo where I met three young people fascinated with me and I communicated with them best as I could with my Spanish and the few Italian words I knew. They said Bella! to the scenes I drew of their village and they asked me to sketch them. I'm not very good at drawing people so when I showed them the drawing they said something I could understand: oooh, zombie with the z pronounced as an s. I stuck to drawing spaces and buildings after that and had a great time.

I have had the same experience: A lot of Americans do a Once in a lifetime-trip to Europe and Italy is reduced to Rome-Florence-Venice and perhaps Milan. Don't get me wrong, these places are fantastic, but I find it quite sad, that Italy gets reduced to these three cities. (Or four, if you count in Milan)
Ironically I'm now staying 6 months in Florence, but I do all sorts of trips around Italy. And in my opinion, the small gems are those places, which make your visit really worth.
My recommendation is, pick a region, where you want to stay, and stay there a week or 2, and explore the regions, and not just the big city.

Yes, I know the hammering gets a bit much. but it was worth it in the end. Please get out and stop by some of the small villages throughout Italy. You will get the most authentic food, great people, and have a chance to experience Italian culture in a great way. Thank you to everyone at Carlotto's for being so nice!

Going to be in Rome for a week in September. What would be a good day trip by train that I could take from Rome to get some small town/village Italy?
