Nice information, but why do travellers when talking about the UK always bring up Manchester in dealings, firstly Manchester is only the 8th largest City in the UK having only about 580, 000 inhabitants living in the City of Manchester it's only tourist feature is Old Trafford, why is the UK's Second Largest City after London not mentioned, the City of Birmingham's population is 1. 3 million on it's own and the conurbation of the West Midlands area has nigh on 6 million people with loads of tourist places such as Cadbury World, our Canals and the home in his younger life of JR Tolkien.
So why mention London, Manchester and Scotland, why not London, Birmingham and Scotland.

Every credit card/atm machine scam device and people trying to sell you travel cards are all from the same place in Europe. I won't say which country but its the same all over Europe. They are not British. If your card or cash ever gets swallowed at an ATM don't leave. Try pulling the card slot as it will be lightly glued to fit on top of the original fitting. They also fit a little cash trap to stop money from coming out. If it has a device on it there will be people less than 20ft away ready to remove it as soon as you leave.

I worked in London for years. Never get an Uber. The black cab drivers are a very regulated breed. Have to know the routes and generally very helpful. Have a standard rate system and a strict code of working. Like people have said public transport is cheaper and getting an Oyster card and using the whole day fixed rate is very cheap indeed if you intend to travel around. Obviously late at night, taxis are safer for lone travellers. Again use a black cab.

If taxi drivers said their credit card system was down, they would probably intend people to think the reader has run out of battery, although I can't see any respectable company allowing this.
If someone ticket-scams me, I would ask to look at the ticket to verify that the information is correct. This scam I imagine would be more of a problem in cities where they don't physically print the date on tickets, such as Oslo.

There used to be a big problem with unlicensed cabs, particularly at transport hubs. They will approach you and negotiate a price to take you somewhere, at too high a price. At some point they may then insist on more money or not take you all the way to the destination. Worse things can also happen. Im not sure that this still goes on now that Uber is available but still watch for it.

Something else to watch out for is beggers hanging around tourist maps. The big boards you see in cities with You are here in a big red dot and arrow. As soon as they see a tourist looking at it, they're over to offer their help. Some are actually excellent and very helpful as they know the city. Others are just chancers and pick pockets. Either way, they'll all want something off you.

It's better to have an old or battered suitcase than sparkling new luggage when travelling by coach or train. The only time someone tried to walk off with mine, I happened to have a fancy-looking case. Actually an old lady pointed to my case and asked a young man to help her with it, then walked off down the platform. That was a scam that she used to repeat at Banbury.

The taxis try that card machine is broke to us locals too. It's so they can defraud their taxes. Just tell them that you don't have any cash on you & make sure that you ask for a card friendly driver when you book your cab. Also, make sure you find out the quickest route to your destination too. Since the addition of meters, they all want to take you the scenic route now

Many of these scams are common in many places around the world. So do not think I am saying these only happen in the UK. However, tourists heading to the UK should pay special attention to these scams. Overall the UK is pretty good when it comes to scams though. Happy travels to where ever you are heading to!

Must be a London thing that 'pound for a dead ticket' scam. In Newcastle people just give you theirs for free and they always work. I've even been given football match tickets in Newcastle for free too (twice) while in the queue to pay for my own by people with family members that couldn't make it to the game.
