After Ft William, we drove to Dunoon as stayed 5 nights there. Stayed in a small hotel right on the beach - gorgeous views. This was our base for south western Scotland.
My grandfather was born in Edinburgh; he was from the Clan Morrison, and it was such an amazing trip, driving around, looking at all the ruins, castles, burial sites, little shops, waterfalls, lochs, etc. Very easy driving around (we put 1400 miles on our rental car.

Probably the best short review I have seen yet. I liked this one. You covered a fair bit without waffling on. kept it interesting.
If you are heading from Edinburgh to Stirling you might want to take a small detour and head over the Forth bridge to the ancient capitol, Dunfermline. It would maybe take you half a day to take in Andrew Carnegie's birthplace and museum, the royal palace and monastery, which fell into ruin after James 1st became James 6th of England too, and moved to London. Adjacent to the palace is the 900 year old Norman abbey (with some more modern parts) where King Robert The Bruce and 11 other Kings and Queens are buried. You could also take in the Scottish Carnegie hall if you have time. With an early start you should fit this and Stirling in no problem.

Disagree bud. If you land in Edinburgh drive North via Fife Costal route to St Andrews then up the coast to Aberdeen, perhaps heading in land to Balmoral, Braemar (Royal Deeside) en route. Then from Aberdeen head west to Inverness and as North then as you will before heading west against toward the Hebrides. (Note the 500 route) From there you can head toward Glasgow, then Stirling and back to Edinburgh. The better alternative is to fly in to Glasgow as it tends to be cheaper for flights and accommodation. Then do the reverse of this route.
The central highlands & Perthshire is a whole different trip as is North of Inverness. Mind do Torridon on the way back down on the west though. The absolute must is Fife! ;)

Mark, I recommend you and Jocelyn watch the Scottish-American movie, Local Hero, if you haven't already. Any American who has watched has tried booking a flight to Scotland the next day. And you've convinced me every which way but Sunday that we gotta visit the Shetland's and Orkney's. We love Edinburgh, Glasgow & the Isle of Skye (and I love Dumfries and southwest Scotland which nobody ever mentions) - definitely more places to see when we return.

Another point to note is that if you become a paid member of Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland this will permit subsequent free access to a massive number of sites.
Entry fees tend to be high at the door so this is the best approach to save a small fortune. You can get family passes. See their websites for more info. ;)

We did a two weeks road trip last year with my girlfriend and the Isle of Mull is the greatest part of Scotland for us. It's a tiny island. You have to take a ferry to get there but it's very beautiful. Ben A'an is also really worth the hike. Skye is pretty nice too. But we didn't like Glasgow.
PS: driving is. Let's say not easy

You missed Dundee. An hour south of Aberdeen and home to the only Victoria and Albert museum outside of London, the RRS Discovery which went to the South Pole with Scott. The Verdant works, Camperdown Wildlife park, Broughty Ferry beach and the Pirate Boat excursion out into the river Tay to see the dolphins. Too good to miss

Suggestion. From Aberdeen to Glasgow. Hop on a train south for an hour to Dundee Scotland's 4th biggest city. The V&A museum and HMS Discovery are right next to the train station. A couple of hours spent there then back on train to Glasgow for an hour and half journey.

How would you recommend getting around in Scotland if you have a driving phobia? I imagine the only options would be go with buddies, exposure therapy, or having a really limited trip. I'd love to see Scotland, and am strategizing on ways to get around.
