Heres our Essential Sri Lanka Travel Guide, giving you EVERYTHING you need to know to travel better for your own Asian adventure! Nayana Stella: Don't go if you actually LOVE elephants. This place is a nightmare for them. Google how elephants are trained by fire and chains to give you those rides and how the farmers treat them.
As an active animal rights activist for the past several years I have seen some horrendous and heartbreaking pictures and videos.
Few, however, have compared to the video from Sri Lanka that became a viral call to action regarding your elephants and what is being allowed in terms of their treatment.
Not only are they used as slave labor but they are punished for merely being in existence in your country. Humans have the capacity to learn new skills and live in other circumstances. Elephants are elephants. We cannot ask them logically to be otherwise, to not need space, to not need food, to not have families that in some measures are superior to how we humans treat our OWN. Elephants do not murder their own children, beat them, impregnate them, etc.
In fact the parental bond of elephants is one of the most intense and amazing on the planet, species be damned.
And THAT is why seeing a baby elephant, probably soon to be killed or taken in to a life of abuse and slavery, trained by agony and fire (YES. I know how they are broken as babies to be unwarranted slaves) trying to feed his mother, collapsed on the ground, as she slowly starved to death. because her mouth had been blown apart by a bomb concealed inside a fruit. Tell me. IN THAT MOMENT, in the making of THAT decision that a bomb was a justifiable way to deal with an innocent animal. who was actually the inferior species?
In case there is any confusion. it was the human who did it. and worse, the humans who allow it with no repercussions.
As the world comes back to some kind of normal, and tourism begins again. is the the face Sri Lanka wants to show the world? You cannot hide it any longer. Every tourist or traveler coming to your land now has the world for an audience and an instantaneous means to make horrors like this known. AND then shared. And that technology will only improve.
Perhaps the government needs to manage NOT the elephants, and not mismanage the humans who take it as their ancestral right to harm them, but to limit how many humans there are so that there is more land to share. Perhaps it is time to talk, not just in your country but every country, about how we need fewer people, better circumstances for them and more room for an elephant mother to raise her child in peace and not die before them, starving and in agony but seeing at least the devotion and love in her baby's actions as he tries desperately to be her caregiver instead.
Let me ask you again. who is the actual superior species? And what does Sri Lanka plan to do to make that answer someday. human beings.
And yes. I am proudly vegan. Nothing dies for me to live.
