I am leaving in just two days to start my trip with my son. We too, booked a lot of activities into the days because we want to see as much as we can.
We also start in Santa Monica, but are only going as far as St. Louis before returning home to Nashville.
Great idea about the smashed pennies. We have been collecting them at all places for awhile. I cant wait to add those to our collection.
We also have plans to film so much and make videos of this event. Weve estimated 9 days, and two days are low key relaxing days before we head home. I have also decided to not drive super late at night for safety concerns.
Im totally looking forward to it, many of your videos have provided me with inspiration to document more trips like this.

Intereesting. Hope you don't mind a LIST of question's from a UK resident. I've driver in the US and on the odd small part of R 66. I'll be 75 in 2023 and have decided to have a Birthday treat and CYCLE the Route. Maybe about 50 to 100 miles a day.
So first question. How safe / dangerous will riding a Bicycle be? If there a lot of Truck's, 18 wheeler's? What's the average Speed limit? You mentioned City's, does the old road, bypass them? Can one bypass the city's? Are there any really long stretches between town's?
I only today decided on this venture. I had considered doing it by car but cycling would be a much more pleasant experiance, i think.
No as & car rental but an auful lot more Hotel cost's! LOL

I trucked from 1998-2003. Saw some of the places you mentioned, and road a tiny piece of old Route 66 in our truck. Riding Route 66 is on my 'Bucket List' so this video is really valuable! Currently I live in Israel and riding Route 66 has been my dream for over a decade. PS there is a 'bottle tree' collection in Clarksdale, Mississippi. You should check the town out and maybe the Blues Highway Highway 61from Memphis going south. oh. another thing. its Interstate 40. yes and it devastated the towns around Route 66. The Mainsteet/Mother Road movement it re-vitalizing slot of neighborhoods! Thanks so much for your videos!

Let me know would just recommend me a best option to rent a car in LA and roughly how much it costs, the similar VAN as you and your dad rent and useded.

I would love to do this road trip. I would go in a conversion cargo van which would cut about $2000 of the total. I also live in Canada, so that would add to the total. I do have a lot of relatives in the US along the route so that would help too. Thank you for the in depth research and information you are sharing. I greatly appreciate it. Loved your series, it seems to me to be the best one 9n YouTube. I am moving west in April and we plan to drive much of the route in a week to our home in California, I'm from Illinois. so it makes sense. We've mapped out highlights and will decide what to skip as the drive continues. We've booked our stays as well so we are anticipating our journey.

I'm thinking of driving Route 66 to celebrate my 66th birthday. I am timid and wondering how to start up conversations along the way? especially with all this covid. Any suggestions? Are there smashed penny vending machines or something on the route; how did you get them and where? Great souvenir!

We just drove a little of Route 66 from Oklahoma to Kansas and got a great interview there, then went into Missouri just a little on Route 66, now heading back to our smoky mountains but Im looking forward to traveling more on Route 66, because its my childhood memories

People commenting on Josh and his Pops eating unhealthy food on a road trip clearly never been on a road trip thats literally all you can eat. The only options are fast food or restaurants where they may have some healthy food like a salad. Other than that no.
