Good video for the people who think they can only go camping if they have expensive high speed kit. If it's summer and not raining, you can easily get by with cheap gear. If it's raining hard and you bring a Goretex sleeping bag cover you're still fine. It's the cheap pack that will kill you if you're in the harness all day. If you're cycle touring, cheap gear is a lot easier to pull off, because there are opportunities on the road to buy new stuff or get materials (like shoe goo and duct tape) to repair broken stuff. I spent 2 months cycle touring with a cheap tent like the one in this video (had a Goretex sleeping bag cover) where I got rained on a lot, had strong winds, and even snowed on once, but it got me to the end of the trip with a few minor repairs.

I understand not starting a fire on the ground when it's really dry, as I'm sure you know us Yanks just celebrated Independents Day, or as you are probably more familiar with Ungrateful Traitor Day (-:
In my local area we are under a red flag warning, meaning most anything can cause a major forest fire and we have several thousand acre forest fires that are still out of control in the immediate area, pretty common really, but because of that the city and borough didn't let the couple companies sell any fireworks, so it was a quieter 4th then usual, on the plus side there was probably also far fewer fingers lost.

Lol. Not a chance. A half mile stroll in the woods Maybe. What I would like to know is how much it all weighs together. It's okay gear for a bug out in a known area, but it's not even good if it pours down with rain. There is no porch, cheap tents leak and a tarp is essential, even if only to keep the sun off them during the day. All the food is burned and half cooked because the pans are too thin. I hate aluminium and titanium. Yes, they're light. That's it. That's their only good point. Learn how to use that twig stove as a stove and not a blow torch. Enjoy your Glamping.

Mike, sorry to bother you with this, but I forgot to ask how did you like the air mattress or sleeping pad you slept on, because sadly since sleeping on the original Kamp-Rite camping cot, I haven’t had the best of luck with them. I did manage to find a Chinese knock-off ultralight cot on TEMU when I realized I couldn’t afford a Helinox cot for my smaller tent the Kamprite cot won’t fit into. But I’m interested in hearing your thoughts about inflatable sleeping pads, because after sleeping on a cot, I just toss and turn when using the inflatable sleeping pads.

I still got my Eurika Spitfire from like 20yrs ago. a little over 100$ and its still going strong.
I bought a Nemo Hornet ($500) to replace it a couple yrs ago and it got two tears in the floor the 1st time I used it.
. I even bought the foot-print and I put my pad between the ground and the tent and something still sliced it up. (I never used a foot-print with the Spitfire, my tiny thermarest pad was all I ever used.
Yeah the Nemo saved maybe 1lb of weight, but I coulda gone through 5 Spitfires for the price of one Hornet. oh well

It's not necessarily things being cheap that saves you money at Go Outdoors and the bigger Decathlons, sometimes you just need to get your hands on some bits of kit to make a good decision and the obvious sizings. The photos on the websites aren't always great and sometimes they even make something look cap when it isn't if there's enough detail to even decide it's cap. Good decisions means you spend less in the long run if you don't overspend in the shop, can be hard to put an item back once you've got your grubby mitts on it!

My parents took us out camping in the 60: s. Your cheap gear is way better than what we had: -)
Besides, this was in the north of Sweden, and the sun may not go down, but it's not really tropical, like England. It's raining at the moment, rained the whole day, but it ended with a proper downpour! Tomorrow we'll see the sun, and then it's back to normal.
I'm not complaining, I quite like it, as my vacation starts in 8 days. :-)

Thanks Mike.
You Small Guys have it made. HAHAHAHAH
I'm 6'4, Large frame, large hands, XL-T shirts 42x36 Pants. Struggle sometimes to find gear that suites Me
I am not overweight Either.
The only back pack that I found that is a nice all day fit and just to get on was the largest Camelback with the 3 Ltr hydration Bladder. My Bed at home is custom mattress that fits in a Super Single Water bed Frame. 84x48

Excellent stealth camp! Lol.
I have a bit of a thing about knives, but the price has skyrocketed in recent years, unfortunately.
Go Outdoors doesn't do fly fishing, mostly only sea fishing. It's basic family camping in there with a few other bits, and that's it.
I'd like you to go to an army surplus store and see what you can get for a trip in one store alone.

Like a lot of the other comments, I love videos like this that show that you can have fun camping even with the least expensive gear, especially when camping near the car and in descent weather conditions. Most of my camping gear is still cheap gear just like in this video. even works fine in the rain if I string up a cheap blue tarp over the tent.

You know what I really enjoy about your videos (and you can say the same for many from Kent Survival as well, is how you’re showing your viewers that they don’t need the most expensive top of the line camping gear to get outside and enjoy yourself. That is the REAL VALUE of your videos, so on that note, keep making us all proud.

Did you know that tent doors, especially when rolled back overnight, should be rolled inwards, not outwards as it stops them collecting water/rain. Not that you needed it on this video. I’ve done it for years now.
Great video as always Mike. What does your camping equipment store look like Must be bursting at the seams!

16gbp! for a Gerber Paraframe Mini geez. mine was $5. VAT and inflation i guess
It's not the most ergonomic and i keep it for a cheap utility in my pocket but these days it's just a 'habitual carry' here. like your normal pocket stuff you take out of habit. not one i'd rely on for bushcraft tho

The Gerber Paraframe was the 2nd knife I ever bought - poor action, awful clip (tip down only, it's possible to cut yourself even when the knife is closed and the steel (7Cr17MoV) won't hold an edge if you cut anything more demanding than paper. Other than that, it's great!

On the subject of air ventilation, I see you left your tent door open and the mesh screen closed. That is the procedure we use on our campouts. What are your thoughts of sleeping in that type of tent with the door closed We have four man tents that house three boys each

Sorry but Go Outdoors are a con. They bought Black's and simply added 30% to the products. Then, they try to make you pay to become a member, to get the old price. Just buy the exact same stuff at Millets, for the same low price, without the membership con and spam lol.

I love all your content mate, really diverse and good. Learned a lot from you. Went on a bushcraft course recently and its not all as easy as it looks. In dry super hot conditions could not get the bloody birch bark to light with my massive ferro rod no matter what

Great video! Sometimes you just need to replace things, and still want something more affordable to enjoy a weekend camping. If you compare the cost to a weekend away at a hotel, it comes about even, except you have things you should be able to use over and over again.

Cheap is ok for those that aren't sure camping is for them and want to give it a go. Cheap doesn't last long. But, should one decide they are not the outdoorsy type they're not out a big investment. Good on you mate. Enjoyed the vid, cheers from across the pond.
