Social media can really suck, but for me personally it's a great improvement. i was sheltered and live in a very crime prominent city, so I was neber allowed to go out or have friends as a child except in class. I didn't learn anything about real life until I was a teen and got access to internet. I'm extremely poor and will never, ever be able to travel to those beautiful places, but I can see them on someone's blog and be allowed to see something I'll never be able to go see in person. I can learn so many things on the internet that I can't afford to pay for a professional class to learn but still want to know for myself, and I'm a huge believer in knowledge always being free to all humans. I still love the outdoors, but I live in a big city and you have to drive an hour or more to get to hiking areas, and only in the winter because our summer heat can kill you in minutes. And I don't own a car so I only get this chance when a friend drives me. I can go days without really getting online except to check for important messages or emails, but without technology my life has very little momentum or worthy events, I literally sit in one spot working and get no enjoyment out of my home town unless someone is available to drive me an hour to the mountains to be in nature. I do hate a lot of the bs on social media these days, especially the fact that people let children on the internet when they have no business here, I didn't even have an email or watch youtube until I was almost 17 and it was only used on school computers. now every kid has a personal phone they can do literally anything on, that's creepy to me. I think everyone should wait for their kids to be at least in high school before providing them a personal device like that. But I do appreciate the worlds opened up to me because of modern technology, otherwise my entire life would be nothing but sleep, tv, and commute except for rare occasions of minimal travel or fun events in town. And my biggest hobbies at home are art and gardening and cooking, all of which I use social media to learn more about, recipes, techniques, etc. that I can't get from a 50 year old collection of outdated encyclopedias. Sadly we have to take thr bad with the good, as with all things in life. but people need to start having more responsibility where internet is involved, definitely.

I agree. Drumheller, Alberta (Canada) is one example. In 2003 you could go out to the hoodoos and there would be nobody there. You could see them in their natural beauty. Just went back to Drumheller this summer and there are busloads of tourists, areas roped off, stairs put in, and food trucks. The area is crowded with people glued to their phones. Same goes for the rest of Alberta's provincial parks. Overcrowded and you have to book a spot months in advance and only online with a credit card. In 2003, you could just show up, pay cash at the campground gate and get in. As for some people with anxiety and not being able to cope with large crowds, it is not always because of social media. Sometimes it could be trauma that causes it such as a military veteran with post traumatic stress disorder from being in combat or an immigrant who grew up in a country during a war. I know a military veteran who did 2 tours in Afghanistan during the war as well as some salvadorans who grew up in El Salvador during the civil war. They are ok working and doing daily things, but will not go to a crowded pub or festival. They do like going out camping in the Bush on crown land though. It is not crowded and it's free and the provincial government allows it. The tourists don't go there because they like their electricity, showers, and wifi. At least we have that. The previous NDP government tried to take that way, but we voted in the conservatives and they put a stop to that so we still have it.

when i lived alone, i had cable. i was not all that impressed. when my husband and i moved in together, we decided against cable and did not have internet for a LONG time, we only watched dvds so that we controlled what was viewed. our twin boys did not have facebook until they were in high school and were involved in many activities, and didnt have cellphones til their senior year. our daughter is a sophomore and still does not have either. the boys were not driving themselves to school until their junior year and it looks the same for their sister. kids do not need to grow up so fast. we tried to get the kids outdoors as much as possible when they were younger. the boys are so tall they cannot find adequate sleeping arrangements in a traditional camping environment and are not too hip on trying too hard(we hope that changes when they are parents. our daughter is truly turned on by your videos and loves the wilderness. but they all appreciate nature and recognize its importance which is what i hope for all children. keep up the videos. you talk of these videos like you've been doing them for years, yet you do not seem to age.

Hey. Just catching up and watching this one. The theory about social media taking over the next generation really hit home with me. Its such a paradox of an idea, that social media really does isolate and divide people. By itself, Im sure it could be great, but it opens the door for humans to do exactly what is wrong for them. I work with technology and have seen the wave of social media crash down on this world. Its ironic that your feed brought it up, but, truth is, most of my exposure to nature comes through your YouTube feed, as I live in a concrete jungle. I do fear that the damage social media and technology is doing can never be reversed, and I fear that the rules and laws cannot keep up with the speed of technology, which leaves our youth vulnerable to so much harm. The change weve seen technology bring in are new forms of addiction, that are find for the body but terrible for the mind, so who among our leaders can do anything? I am a big fan and youve inspired me to do things I otherwise probably wouldnt do. I like that you and your wife raised this topic and it brings another level of quality to your feed.

The problem is that, if they were to go out now, most things like parks etc have been destroyed, plus knife crime is so high etc. It was only a few days ago, a girl was sat on a park bench with her mate, completely minding her own business, and got stabbed in the back and died. It's just simply too dangerous now for children to be out basically, back when I was a kid, the worst that would happen is that u'd have a fist fight or get smacked with a plank of wood, lol. as I got older, I ended up getting slashed with a knife etc, so times were turning for the worst even back then. However, technology, depending how it's used, is the way forward for the future, everything is becoming technology / bot orientated and so we need them to basically grow up educated with computing because, whether people like it or not, we are seeing for a fact, it's the future. without them, we can't evolve further. But like I say, it needs to be used in the right way, (follow more positive people on Twitter, get rid of Instagram because everything is fake / photoshopped and touched up on it, etc etc. Love your videos btw, excellent job.

Hello you lovely couple Seems to me that Social Media is robbing many of their fantasy-filled childhood. It baffles me why so many ( not just the young) have become inflicted to have to constantly tune into Facebook etc, with this approval seeking sickness. Admittedly, approval & compliments can be enjoyed, but it seems that for a surprising amount of people today, it has become a NEED. Emotionally immature people persons have great difficulties in accepting disapproval, indicating lower self- esteem. I'm convinced Social Media is stunting the growth of the youthful turning many into unsociable- digitally addicted- Zombies within a few years How devastating that many youngsters find being in the outdoors with nature, nothing more than boring. Anyway Mike, heartfelt thanks to you and your Dad for the informative, beautifully photographed & humourful video's. Hope they don't stop Blessings to your entire family

I'm a bit late commenting. however, I'd like to say I agree that there are too many people too involved with their phones and too little involved in just living. I'm lucky to have moved myself and my kids to a town that embraces nature, education, and technology. The town is nestled in a lovely mountain valley and getting out in nature is part of the culture here. Seeing your video's reminds me of my youth, and inspires me and my little family. We are planing to take hikes, camp, and my youngest son wants to go on camping-hunting trips with me I've never hunted (I have always wanted to) but I used to go fishing in Carmel Valley years ago. I was very uncomfortable getting on utube(and the internet) untill my kids tolled me that there were 'how to' type stuff there. I'm really glad I found T. A. Out doors I'm quite inspired again Thank you

Its not happening to my sons (9 and 5) I am a forest school leader and their Dad is a fisherman, carpenter and outdoorsman. They play gameboy and watch Youtube but also fish, hike, swim, climb use knives, axes and make fires. They show respect to others, they do not own phones and they eat dinner at the table every meal and have good manners. A big problem is immature lazy parents. It takes constant work and effort to raise children properly. People nowadays can't even discipline themselves enough to hold their marriages together let alone raise kids. My Husband and sons love your Dad by the way lol.

Here in the US i have gone camping for 2 months at a time with zero cell reception in the rockies of MT. I would go back to town once every week or two to fill up on gas ice and other stuff (I was not roughing it. I did miss having human interaction but it was far better than being alienated by social media. What i mean to say is there are two sides to the coin but being outdoors too much only leaves me with emence happiness and a drive to have a meaningful conversation I wouldnt trade anything for those months up in the mountian with my shotgun and pick up grinning from ear to ear

I agree 100% that social media is destroying society. I am 55 years old, we didn't have cable television, video games or cell phones but we had the time of our lives growing up. In the summer we played outside until the street lights came on or a parent yelled your name from the front porch. We never asked for a ride, our bicycles were our transportation everywhere and by the end of the summer the tires were bald. The kids today will never experience any of these things and that is a shame. I very much enjoy your videos, keep them coming brother. Michael ( USA )
