We build an off grid cabin in nature using wood that was harvested from my fallen ash tree. First we build the foundations of the cabin using milled ash posts for the frame. We raised the cabin foundations on large oak and ash logs. We then built the floor using sawn lumber for the joists and then adding in noggins to make it rigid and secure. The ash framework was secured with coach screws and the floor joists were secured with large nails. We then added moisture resistant floor boards and now we are ready for the studwork and timber framing! Cheers for watching and be sure to subscribe if you want to follow along on the series. Say: I've been building a cabin with my wife in the middle of absolute nowhere land and as soon as we are done hopefully around June we'll be done and moved in we are throwing out everything with a screen, no more tv cellphone computer etc. We are getting back to real life how it's supposed to and meant to be lived.

I am not a builder, so my question is out of curiosity. When you started the floor, why cut the 2x4, wouldn't it be easier to just make the floor the size of the 2x4s to avoid cutting? Oh I see, maybe it was to fit the other pieces without cutting all of them?

As long as you can sit down out of the worst of the weather and have a brew up, it will be a winner.
Maybe some of those stone/concrete mushrooms you see on old grain stores would be a suitable foundation. They are intended to keep the rats out.

Wonderful video. I love watching you and your dad work together. One suggestion. If you would add a metal flashing over each of the logs it will slow down the termites. Just make a cap and bend down the edges and the termites shouldn t go around it.

Would it have been more lasting to use big rocks instead of Treestumps as the base? Any Wood touching the ground is gonna rot a lot faster than the rest. I only know the theory, never built anything myself so im happy if someone can enlighten me.

While not technically to be lived in, I expect you'll set it up so you can overnight in there if you need/want to? Esp since it's the first real structure on your new land. At least a bench that's long enough to sleep on?

And will you be replacing those logs with boulders at some point? Cuz now you've put your foundation on logs positioned vertically, perfect for wicking up all kinds of moisture into your foundation beams?

I think in some parts of the US, that would becalled a Wildlife or Game Observation Hut; unless you camoflauged the exterior then we would call it a 'Blind. ' Excited to see the end result.
