GULFPORT, Mississippi: We Were TOTALLY SURPRISED At What We Saw There I typed a long comment which I was very happy with and I think you would have liked. But all I have is a smart phone to go online with and I accidentally hit the delete button. Oh well I will just say it was a great tour of a place i have always been curious about. Ill take a stab at recalling what i deleted. I said my parents went to Gulfport in 1982 and thought it was one of the most beautiful places they had been and considered retiring there. Im from the seattle area and i went to Galveston many years ago and couldnt believe how warm the water was. I live on 1 thousand a month social security because I was self employed and made the mistake of not paying into SS. If i had known the cost of living is so low in. GP I certainly would have gone there. But i have a nice apartment in Tacoma. The housing in Gulfport looks much like in Tacoma. Old but well kept up.

Im The Local Born Park Ranger. Actually! You are standing in the Mississippi Sound. The Gulf of Mexico is about 12 miles out. other side of the Barrier Islands. Glad You enjoyed the MS Sound and the Coast! I was Born in Gulfport, Been on Coast 34 Years. Rode out Hurricane Katrina in Highschool. Twin cities Biloxi was founded around 1699 Gulfport wasnt i corporated till 1898. used to be Mississippi City. Oldest House in MS is the Krebs House in Pascagoula. A perfect example of Colonial French Construction built in 1757. Im not knocking the video but the terminology is a bit incorrect. Ocean Springs was voted by USA today in 2022 as the #1 Best Small Coastal Town in the USA to live!

I visited some friends in Gulfport about 12 years ago, and went back again in April 2023. I LOVE IT! Me being an up north city girl, the south captures my soul. I wanted to go back over the years, but personal and financial reasons held me back from doing anything. I met a man from there who I fell in love with. But we couldn't pursue the relationship we wanted because of the distance, on top of him having the same issues I had. I found out he wanted to reconcile (and I was DEFINITELY willing) But sadly he passed away before we could put our cards on the table and deal them the right way. My heart is broken because he's physically gone, but he'll be forever in my heart.

I grew up in Orange Grove/Bel Aire on Ben Drive which is part of Gulfport now. It was good times then, my friends and I walked everywhere back in the 80s, not a worry in the world and us neighborhood kids all got along pretty well. I’ve heard it’s went downhill since then. I have family there on the coast and my mom owns a rental property and land. I haven’t been back since 2001 and have no desire now to ever go back. I love living in a county of 1800 people with the wide open skies of Kansas where I can hunt to my heart’s desire.

I just moved here in the beginning of 2023. Before I lived in Hattiesburg for a year. Both places are terrible to me. No Nightlife whatsoever. It's nothing but restaurants here in either city. Alot of Military people on the coast, it's hard talking to military and civilians. Most of them never traveled outside the Mid-Central Time Zone states. Tons of people here have never been to a real nightclub. Techno here is definitely unheard of. I'm heading back to Seattle next year!

In roughly 5 years I'll be moving to warmer climates. At the moment Biloxi and Gulfport seem the most attractive for affordability and mass transit to say nothing of a beach. Florida was my Jimmy Buffet dream for shabby chic but I think that boat sailed a long time ago, Florida seems to be out of my price range for any place I would want to live on a modest budget. I keep Coco Beach in my mind though. maybe just maybe a studio will pop up there at the right time.

As someone who has lived in Ocean Springs my whole life I truly can not imagine living anywhere else it is a perfect place to live it has the feeling of a nice big city with lots to do, but does not have a crazy population and traffic is not near as bad as say Destin Ocean springs Biloxi Long Beach all beautiful places like I said its nice to live somewhere with loots to do with not so many people perfect place to settle down.

So happy that you enjoyed our GulfCoast! One hint - Biloxi is pronounced BeLuxEe. (Ask a local.
It is a well kept secret and nothing like anything you’ve ever heard of Mississippi- the Gulfcoast stretches from just outside of New Orleans to Pensacola- very cosmopolitan and a mixture of people from all over. Many military bases and lots of retired military and snowbirds retire here! And lots of New Orleanians too

Out of 3 locations: Gulfport, Biloxi, or Corpus(all which you've visited) Where would advise someone to live if they wanted the coastal life, wanted to enjoy some urban city life(go to shows, festivals, coffee shops, yet not live downtown. I mentioned MS towns because they were about an hour and a half from New Orleans. I'm planning in moving to the Gulf. I've been to Corpus, love Padre Island, but not the other two.

As someone who has lived in Gulfport then Biloxi for 16 years, I can tell you that Gulfport is the trashiest place in Coastal MS. Especially south of the Interstate. Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Long Beach & Pass Christian are all pretty nice, but Gulfport is the blight on the area. It’s because of the people that live there, the city tries really hard to make it nice but the crime keeps getting worse.

All of the empty lots that you see are where homes and businesses used to be. Katrina did more damage to Mississippi thatn we get attention for. New orleans flooded but Imagine 90' of water smahing into a building. It wiped out so much. What you see know is what has been rebuilt. Houses were just wased off their foundations and smashed into other houses. It was really tramatic for our community.

I have lived here for 30yrs. It was great in 1992 till 1998 then to much traffic, and very expensive living, Ocean dirty, and not too safe to swimming in it! It's not what you see. and crime yes is there!
It used to be very nice,
Better than South Mobile on their Coast line. But now sorry to say. now they get the tourism, water cleaner there!
Shame shame

Ah, the Joys of Little Dixie. Last time I was there, it was like the Wild West, Wide Open, Bars, Strip Joints, Music Bars ( venues )everyone had their hand in your pockets, trying to get to your money. Cheap Motels right on the beach. Fantastic Food, the original town peoplewere as good as gold, nice, friendly, but watch out for an attorney named Halat.

I'm 49, moved here when I was 15. I really dont know of a single spot from Alabama to Louisiana with blue water. Brown is a closer match than blue. No shoes is crazy with all the needles in the sand. Who is paying this guy. Do not plan a trip here according to this guys evaluation. He's gotta be blind.
reply

Are there any pedestrian crossings on beach boulevard If you live in those fancy houses it seems you still have to cross those busy roads somehow to get down to the beach it just looks funny as a European, your not used to having highways block of the entire beach in these resorts
reply

I hate to tell you my friend but the water isn’t blue I’m from Biloxi and we don’t swim in the Gulf we don’t even stick our feet in it I would be careful especially if you have any cuts or scratches you will end up in a really bad situation stay safe my friend
reply

Around 4: 50 you were about a mile and a half from my old favorite fishing spot! On the other side of that marina, across the street from waffle house.
I pulled soooo many huge redfish, black tip shark and rays out of there! All realeased ofc.

reply

You showed the 2 nice blocks near the beach. just over those train tracks it goes to straight ghetto.
I rented a 4 bed house, with a yard. for 750 a month, so you can guess that the area wasnt great even though i was 3/4 mile from the beach.

reply

Yes, the cost of living on our coast aligns with our income. Well kept homes and yards depends on the neighborhood of any of our cities. Poverty extends the blight. Enjoyed the drone view. Hwy 90 offers a positive view traveling by vehicle.
reply

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you weren't standing in the Gulf of Mexico, you were standing in the Mississippi Sound. You have to go out past the barrier islands to be in the Gulf. Close enough, though. Great video!
reply

I was born in Gulfport and I've lived in a couple different states, various different cities, and I've always ended up coming back home to the coast. I'm in Long Beach MS now, Gulfport can get a little wild sometimes: P
reply

I grew up in Gulfport. Haven’t been back since the early 2000’s. I went into the USAF to get out of MS. I laughed when you said Blue waters. Only people ever in the water on the coast are tourists.
reply

Protip: If New Orleans isn't part of your itinerary, get on I-12 in Baton Rouge. It's a shortcut, plus you can avoid I-10 between the high rise and twin span (thus avoiding the worst drivers in the world.
reply

Katrina whipped out much of the area. New Orleans destruction was due to flooding when the levees broke. This coastal area was destroyed by wind and storm surge leveling buildings not just flooding them

Mississippian girl here, I think I been to that restaurant at the end. I love like 35 40 minutes from Pascagoula. I’m from a little town in Mississippi that no one probably knows of lol Vancleave.
reply

It's cheap until you try and get insurance. We just moved to Pascagoula which is about an hour and a half away, right on the border of AL. Insurance is a nightmare to get and it costs a fortune.
reply

I miss coming to Gulfport MS. Since my grandmother passed in 2014 and my aunt died we don’t come there anymore. I lived in Pass Christian when I was little. I now live in NC
reply

There's one little small area that is responsible for the majority of crime there. Gaston point. But the people in there stay in there for the most part. North gulfport is nicer.
reply

I've lived in Pass Christian, Ms for 8 years now. Thank you for showing my beautiful Mississippi through your eyes. I've fallen in love with its beauty and charm all over again!
reply

Thank you for you kind comments on our town. We, like most other towns, have our downfalls, but still Gulfport is a nice place to live. The entire coast is worth moving to.
reply

Gulfport is a hidden gem. Quiet, clean and just a great place to enjoy the beach and relax. It is a welcoming, friendly community. I just hope it remains this way.
reply

Great video, thanks for doing this. Gulfport has been on my radar for a few years, nice to get a look at things from the ground and an impartial assessment.
reply

It is beautiful I love driving up and down highway 90. Love the beauty it has to offer but if you go farther into the town not so nice and very high crime.
reply

That's not the Gulf of Mexico. it's the Mississippi sound, divided by the islands. If you want to see the bluest water you'll ever see go past the islands.
reply

Retired NYC drummer/bartender that can't tell you how much I enjoyed the video. I will be heading down that way for a look see. Great job and thanks. JJ
