My Mom came from Denmark. If you saw the tennis courts that's where my Grandparent's house was, next to the old wooden John Deere store that was next to the new John Deere store. Between their house and the John Deere's was the 'city jail' adjoining their property that was actually an un-air-conditioned blockhouse with three cells that was unmanned. I could see all the goings on there and every Friday night they'd lock some poor drunk up and they would LEAVE them there when it would get hot the next day and they would beg my Grandmother to give them a drink of water. Awful story, but I feel compelled to tell it. Something interesting was dirt road that made a horsehoe behind the John Deere that went through the woods and both sides of the road were lined with machinery and equipment that would bring a fortune today as antiques. I'd love to have one of those gas pumps with the glass reservoir that had to be pumped by hand. It was a fascinating place for a kid. Of course we went to the 'Dane' theater for entertainment. I remember seeing a Rock Hudson movie, Blindfold in 1966. Oh yes, behind their propery was a hitching post, a pipe that had grown solidly into two large trees. It's probably gone now.

My maternal grandparents lived in Kershaw and worked at the textile mills before they shut down. These towns show what happens when MFG plants move overseas. A lot of people scoff and say So what Who wants those jobs The answer is there are a lot of people who would eagerly work those jobs. The problem is whenever State/Federal government spends too much money they need more money and know they can't raise taxes on individuals or they risk getting voted out so they raise taxes on businesses and MFG plants and those businesses eventually get fed up and move overseas. State and Federal governments get tax revenue from companies from the employees PAYCHECKS. If a company employees 1000 people in a region, that means there are 1000 people getting taxed with every paycheck, they also pay taxes when they buy gas, food, clothing and they help the economy by buying houses or renting apartments. If that company moves you then have 1000 people OUT OF WORK who now need assistance. We need to quit running companies off.

As a young man playing Guitar with my Fathers Gospel Group, You'd think I know most of these towns. Since we travel to and through many of them. LIke Clinton, Greer, Wahalla Pickens, and Travels Rest.
Sad historical Fact: Many of these small town were bandon due to racism and young people looking for higher paying jobs outside of Textiles. As many of my friends tell me, They were tired of Police Harassment Neighbor Harassment, low pay, and down right boredom.
14: 13-I do remember going to Denmark. My Uncle went to college there. But don't remember which one. But he later became a Naval Photographer, so I'm guessing the Denmark Technical College.
BTW, I notice there are very few people out walking, hiking, Biking or any form of exercise.
21: 00. Now that you mentioned it was a School for Blacks. Maybe this is where my Uncle when. I remember seeing only Black Students there.

My family is from Denmark SC, and although I was born in Mullins, I claim Denmark as where I’m from. My Grandaddy and Grandmother lived by the railroad tracks going out of town. My grandmother lived in a tiny apartment behind Bookers. My aunt and uncle (moms siblings) lived there all their lives. Two of my uncles worked for the power company. I spent my summers there with family, walking to the Dane on Saturday afternoon for a matinee, and swimming in the Edisto River at the Country Club. It was a very safe town in the 50’s and 60’s and full of life and activity. My cousin and I walked the town day and night with no fear. Both of my parents are buried in the Denmark Cemetery. I have been back there many times over the years and have watched the town slowly decline. It is sad to see the beautiful homes fall into states of disrepair. I still say with pride I’m from Denmark SC!

A lot of those homes that are abandoned in the areas like Denmark, Blackville, Springfield, Bamberg, because people die off and they have no more family and the house is just sit there to rot.
I love Blackville we drive 100 miles to go there often to God’s acres healing Spring, there’s a restaurant that we love called Millers Bread Basket. Delicious food made fresh daily. A simple menu but most times that we go there. The place is packed. You don’t have a bad meal at Millers Bread Basket restaurant. The country store near God’s Acres Healing Spring, has delicious sandwiches and ice cream. If you’re in those areas, stop at Millers Bread Basket, locate in the Downtown of Blackville, and the country store I believe that’s on the corner of SC Highway 3 and healing Springs Road.

My family is frm Denmark and Bamberg SC. I attended Denmark Tech and my friends graduated from Vorhees College. Most of my family relocated to NY and or Columbia SC. When we visited Denmark we see our family living in nice homes and we visit differnt parts of the town that aren't run down. The air smells different (fresh)and it's actually beautiful down there but when you hear the logistics of the town it's really scary. We did used to see a lot of poverty when we steppped off of the campus and I was once in poverty but it's just different down there and sad. They do have programs dealing with educational systems but people dont utilize them as the should. I just want to own some land and visti when the Cooter Fest passes through lol

My grandparents grew up in Bamberg, I’ve been doing a lot of ancestry research in Bamberg. My Grandma who is 90 now, she moved to NY in her 20s i believe! and the stories she told me about growing up in SC! poverty at its finest, no fridge, they would dig a hole in the yard and pack it with ice and store items, they made preserves out of watermelon grind, her mom would can and store peaches, beans, etc! her mother would also make her a dress out of a potato sack! she grew up on a farm! and would be called the n word by the white kids as she walked to school. it’s something that it’s still a poor town!

Born and raised in SC & now a SC Realtor. Looks can be deceiving, prices are on the rise. Check out the land listings throughout small town SC! SC is a great state to invest in especially if downsizing, retiring, looking for warmer weather, we have a large equestrian presence or investors looking to flip & sale. Our small towns are often a short drive to larger cities to shop & dine and usually around a 2-hour drive to our pristine beaches or Blue Ridge Mountains! I recommend looking into Aiken County as well as Edgefield and Saluda Counties. Check it out & let me know what you think!

This video stirs up a lot of fond memories for me. I would travel these back roads. first as a child with my parents and later by myself. when traveling from just outside of Atlanta to Conway, SC over a 40 year period ending in 2007. My parents loved the backroads. We would take the interstate until we got to Augusta and then backroads through the small towns the rest of the way. I haven't made the journey now for 15 years. parents and aunts and uncles are all gone now. I miss those trips.

In most small towns around the nation that were built in the late 1800's and on, there were NO cars. Only horse and buggy. The streets did not need to be wide but two lane. As time went on the the car came into its own, the streets had enough room to park cars and two lanes to travel. For some reason like this small town, the made the streets wide for traffic cars and trucks and lost the parking spaces. In a modern town, you will find wider streets.

This was a very enlightening video. I drove all four of those town back in 1993 as a delivery driver for Alco Health Services. The people was so nice and sweet at every stop. It is so good to see that these towns are still quaint, quiet, and like another comment mentioned. NO HOMELESS PEOPLE! The towns are poor but the people are so genuine. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Springfield had one video store. National Home Video. Remember that

I know you probably have no ideal, and no one notice it either according to comments. Please pay attention from 10: 42 til 10: 53 pay attention to the house in front and don’t move your eyes from the porch is clearly an spirit. It moved to the left and blended in with the side of wall. And as you make that left turn it dashed to the right. It’s was an impossible shot but it was taking unexpectedly and couldn’t hide.

I'm from St. George, SC, not far from the other towns mentioned from the aforementioned towns. I had the best growing-up experiences in that town when it comes to values and responsibilities. Although it didn't have a future for me to remain there, it sure gave me the courage to go on and join the Navy. Every time I go back to visit, it's still the same and it's not perfect but it's still better than most places.

Born and raised near Charleston, SC took a day trip to Blackville, SC to load up on the healing waters, To me it tasted like dirt but my dad swears by it. Went to lunch at a Amish restaurant(super yummy) in the Downtown area, the ppl there were so friendly and nice, they were coming out of the shops to speak to us as we walked to the restaurant.

I have driven through many of these towns in my lifetime. It is sad to see these places die. I always wonder WHY this happens Why do these little places dry up and die Is it the residents that cause it Is it corruption in local government It really is a shame. Some of these little towns could be beautiful places to live with a little investment.

I agree with the viewer below; TimRockit!
The Mental and Physical state would prohibit a lot from taking place.
The majority are unhealthy, and who will work to have anything and you don't feel well. Let us not forget about any side effects.
Where are the jobs in these towns for one to sustain themselves

The towns around Springfield, Barnwell and Blackville suffered when the Savanah river plant cut back employment and construction slowed down. Not work in this area anymore. The people have to make choices either to move to the work if they can afford it or live off the government. The latter is a hard dull life.

Ever thought of doing a walk through South Carolina is one of the few that hasn't improved its infrastructure. Should someone have an entrepreneur nack, placing a grocery store in these towns would change everything. The street did have only 2 lanes. No turn lane. The state or county probably mandated.

If South Carolina invested in a commuter rail network to the larger cities, maybe these small towns would see a change. So many small businesses were shut down probably due to licensing and permit restrictions. My mom told me that back in the day people would take trains from the small towns to bigger cities

Use to go to springfield to get to Aiken, sc on highway 4. That is a very small town, with hardly any businesses. You should have stopped at healing springs its right before you get to blackville down hwy 3. Its known to have healing water that comes from springs in the ground.

If you ever have a chance and time, do a video on Winnsboro South Carolina just 25 miles north of the capitol Columbia. West, north west, northeast and east of Columbia are thriving areas. North of the City, Winnsboro is falling apart and looking like the slum of SC.
