Echoes of some of the UK cities in the 1980's that grew and prospered around certain industries which then closed leaving many of the residents unemployed and neighbourhoods in decline. The decline can last for decades and redevelopment can be a long drawn out affair. From my travels around the UK driving trucks for 30 years I never ceased to be amazed at how the scenery and even the atmosphere can change at a crossroads or junction, it's almost as if any vision or investment hits a 'no entry' sign and goes no further short of perhaps demolishing an old industrial site and erecting a big 'for sale' sign on the land that becomes a landmark for years to come.

Gary can't be saved. Nobody with any brains would invest in a city where so much of the population would rather destroy what they have than simply take care of it. The majority of the population left because Gary was left to decay for so many decades and anything they had vested with the town was declining in value by the minute. Watching this video, I was thinking of the potential it might have if I were a billionaire wanting to invest and the crime statistics were a complete turn-off. Then there's the fact that you're dealing with the same type of corrupt government that runs Chicago. Not a chance.

The decline started in the early 1980's when American industry decided it was better to pay as few people a living wage as they could, and sent their production to China. Why does Walmart make Billions in profit, yet their employees are the biggest users of State and Federal welfare Easy, they pay dividends to the stockholders, most of who are in the top 1% of the income of the USA. Granted, Walmart is not a producer, but that's the typical mindset of capitalist industry in the US.

The city in Germany with the highest murder rate is Hildesheim. Hildesheim has 102, 000 inhabitants and in 2022 there were 12 killings. So 12 murders per 100, 000 inhabitants, making this city the most dangerous in Germany. No one knows why this city is completely out of the ordinary. In the whole of Germany (85 million inhabitants) there were a total of 264 murders. The people of Hildesheim are crazy

This video left me with only one question. Why didn't Michael Jackson with his endless fortune help bring back the city he was once raised in He could have made a donation, fixed the place up so it doesn't look like Beirut and had something in the town like the ball field or a park for kids named after him. The Jackson family still has so much money they should do that.

I'd love to go exploring the abandoned buildings. as long as I had a kevlar vest and sufficient spare magazines for my firearm. What's the cost of living compared to the rest of the country. Be interesting if you could save money working there with a remote/telework job.

My friends' family nearly bought that red house visible on the right side of the road starting at 29: 20. It was awesome, it had an entire separate apartment set up in the basement, I would've been ready to move in with them there.

Imagine if you could bring an industry here. Like TESLA vehicles or something large like that. Employment opportunities, and growth for the town and people. The city and the state needs to help bring big industry back.

Gary USED to be Murder City USA. literally the highest murder rate of any city in the USA. then the state made the city get rid of all its gun control laws. its still dangerous, but not as bad.

You mentioned a lack of homeless residents but I'm pretty sure if you look at 12: 27, in the upper left window pane, there's a quick flash of someone leaning to look out the window.

It broke my heart when you read the graffiti that said ACKNOWLEDGE ME. Every human being has the need to be known and cherished. So many of us have no idea how lucky we are.

Ideally they should clear all the abandoned buildings and clear the litter. so that the people still living there don't have to live with the decay

Meanwhile, here in Ontario, Canada, there is a shortage of housing, and the median price is $750K. Any abandoned lot gets built on in short order.

I live near Camden, NJ. Has about 60, 000 people. It was on the high murder rate list, consistently. Another dying industrial city.
