MISSISSIPPI: The Poorest Towns In The USA's Poorest State - Forgotten, Dying Places In The Delta I moved to Clarksdale for retirement after 40 years in Calif. Just went to one of the many blues festivals we have in the area. This was in Helena, Ar, about 30 miles away. Were just 50 miles south of Memphis. We have live music here 7 nights a week and our Juke Joint Festival every April. Yes, we are a convenience store nation now and we buy our stuff online which hurts downtown. But the people around here are so friendly. I love it. Everything costs 2/3 less than in Calif. People are poor but they are not depressed with anxiety. Good, salt of the earth folks. Houses are really cheap and utility rates are low. I pay $300 per month rent.

I'm on my grandmother's computer (I'm 14. I am living in a town where you have to make at least 7 figures, according to my dad. Are towns like this one in this upload real or fabricated Do they really exist or is this sensationalism I cannot believe people really live like this. If this is not 'made-up', how does it get fixed How do people survive I have so many questions. Is it the people's fault they live like this I don't believe my dad when he says people are impoverished by choice. I may be a kid, but who chooses to live like this if it really real

When I was a truck driver I would frequent Corinth MS to drop of a load the place was depressing and I couldn’t wait to get the hell on. If we’re being honest Mississippi has a lot of blood on it’s hand from the chattel slavery days, to me it makes since that the roosters have come home to roost.

The thing that boggles my mind is that the houses are falling apart but there are fairly late modeled vehicles parked in the driveway of that house. Why not use some of the money spent on those rides to either slowly rebuild their houses or move to another place that is better. SMH

I was born in southern Mississippi and raised there and southern Louisiana. My dad’s job moved us to Washington when I was 16 and since then I’ve lived all over the country. I’m 51 and have never moved back. I have fond memories of my childhood down there.

I lived in Mississippi for a few years and it's very smart people in Mississippi, they are all educated but they don't branch out, they stay in the town and never relocate for change. I don't blame them. God and family is everything

The UN's report on rural MS was sad! They said that in some places it was worse than 3rd world countries. They even reported seeing sewage running in open ditches. This is a complete political failure! Where are their representatives
