This is happening all over Illinois and probably all over every other similar state. These tiny towns only ever existed because of the farming communities they were centered on. As big agriculture keeps taking over more and more of it and farmers are selling out to the government so they can make forest preserves there are no longer enough people to sustain these micro towns. I drive on a daily basis all over between the WI/IL border to Rockford, Peoria, Normal and half the towns you go through are like this or worse.

5: 50 I first drove through this town a couple months ago and now do every couple weeks on my delivery route. That sign on your left thats about to fall down is the one image that sticks out to me going through for some reason. First time I seen it there was a group of people standing right under it while it swings away. The more I go through here the more I see. I am definitely interested in this towns history. It really looked like a booming town at one time.

Mound has a much higher crime rate because of its high black population. That is why the population went from 27, 000 down to 600. All the white people actually left in order to get a way from the black population. High crime is in the black population. Crime in Joppa is very low because 92% of the population is white. If the majority of the population was black, the crime rate would be much higher. Marilyn Monroe was a male to female transgender.

Great vid. You might try West Frankfort. I've worked in Mounds, Mound City, Cairo and several surrounding towns and villages. Most of them have a B l u e L O D G E right in the center of town. The politicians in the club have milked these towns way beyond repair. Cairo has streets in mid downtown that are half covered over with tree branches. The leadership is pathetic and they are members in the club.

If you want to see some bizarre, creepy, dying towns, head to where the rivers are in the far southwest corner of IL. The old river towns like Hannibal and Kampsville, or nearby Nebo, Pleasant Hill or Pearl. For the longest time, Kampsville had an old dilapidated paddle wheel River boat half run aground laying there. Entire towns are either abandoned or close to it in this riverbed area.

And know what’s funny I support urbex, and it’s a levies not flood walls! Dude

The problem in Illinois the state is basically run by Chicago which is a massive metropolitan area. The rest of the state is very rural. Being rural isn't the problem because a fair amount of people like rural living. The issue in Illinois is everyone is taxed like they are living in New York City. So small town living isn't nearly as affordable as some states.

Cairo, Illinois, was a whites' rights only, & the civil rights unrest in the mid 1960s - early 1970s, where race violence tried to stop giving the black 1/3 of the population their human & civil rights, led to mass white flight! The state legislature didn't help them rebuild because it might include benefits for blacks as well as whites!

Its the taxes and the democrat ran state. People can not afford to pay the over the top taxes per year regardless of how cheap they sell the houses for. That and crime has become a issue as well, only to be made worse with the illegal gun ban bill that boss hogg pritzker passed. Glad I left illinois, hope I never have to return.

14: 17 That is beautiful.
I'm from MA. I don't see houses like some of the ones I've seen in your videos. Dilapidated. They either restore them or tear them down immediately. Because it's dangerous and an eye sore. I'd rather see clean, empty lots that someone could purchase and build a business or home on.

Thank for your film. I grew up in southern Illinois, Belleville, and loved taking drives further south in the state. I can no longer do that so you bring back memories. In the fall there was something so comforting about stopping at a little local restaurant for comfort food in on long drive,

These are the results of Democrat policy. When you vote for appeasement instead of structure ( morally and economic) this is what you get. And i know its difficult to admit you made a mistake for voting a certain way, but acknowledge it and vote faith & family structure next time.

It just amazes me that towns could just become ghostly like that I mean why don't they just open some businesses and give those people in that town money to open businesses cheap so the businesses will have the town thrive again. What are the home prices in that area

I’m from southern Illinois and joined the Air Force in the late 1990s. When I retired I desperately wanted to move back but there’s nothing for my family. It sucks because I want my kids to be near their extended family but there’s no opportunity for them.

I used to live down in that area in a town called Vienna, IL. Much of that part of Illinois is abandoned and decayed. I wouldnt recommend anyone living down there personally. It's a nice get away from the city life, but not suitable for living.

Once you verify the paint has no lead. .. .. . I see firewood, not from a fire point of view but from a reuse recycle point of view. Some of the wood, depending on the type can be turned into beautiful furniture by the right craftman.

My brother in-law use to live in Metropolis! Been there a lot. Love going to the old fort. Lots of history there. Sad to see these once prosperous little towns dying. Then again we are seeing some finding a rebirth.

technically, it's NOT the Superman Museum, it's the Super Museum. Superman is trademarked so they really cannot use the name. Been there. Did you visit the Lois Lane statue Yes! You didn't miss it.

This is so very foreign to me! I am from a very beautiful and prosperous area in south OC, California, so seeing this and hearing about these places is almost heartbreaking!

Next, you can make a video about happy towns and cities in Illinois that are growing. Peoria is a perfect example. I moved here some years ago from California. Much happier here!

26: 04 All those little houses, smaller than some garages, and some look like sheds, if I owned them, I'd knock them down myself, get a truck, and mow the damn lawn.
Unreal.

What you are doing is actually important. yu are documenting history. One day when all these places no longer exist, people still refer to your videos to glimpse into the past.

The house at the 39 minute mark is an apartment house. There are 4 mailboxes at the door so I am sure between the 4 apartments, it’s not as much as you think.

Those abandoned homes look like they'd be good places to metal detect their yards. There must be tons of coins, relics, artefacts etc. just waiting to be found.

Illinois is in a death spin, spiraling downward due to corrupt politicians, mismanagement and pensions that are the financial downfall of the state.

A lot of these old river towns are dying. I live in the general area and there just isn't a need for the goods and services they provided at one time.

That really nice, large home in Mound City is Wall Manor - a bed & breakfast. Seems like an undesirable location to stay at a bed & breakfast.
