SPRINGFIELD: Worth Visiting What We Saw In The Illinois Capital City
video description
I returned home, called my mother and told her to remember this name: Barak Obama.
I told her: Mom, remember his name, hes going to be our next President after Bush.
Not to make this political, but I did always look forward to my annual trips down to Springfield from St. Charles. I loved growing up in Illinois. Sadly, I am curently living in Wisconsin as Illinois taxes and cost of living is simply too high for my taste. I miss my home state.
Thank you for sharing this video!
Oh, if you ever get back to Springfield, I highly recommend trying Springfields signature dish: The Horseshoe Sandwich.
Many establishments in the town have their own versions but you had visited one of my favorites: Obed & Isaacs. I love their handcut fries!

I have tears in my eyes after watching this video. Your honor, respect, and beautiful words touched my heart. My father took us on road trips in our Pontiac station wagon. My parents had ten of us kids so it was quite an endeavor. I can’t travel or drive anymore at 74 so I now ride along with you on your road trips. This tour of Abraham Lincoln’s tomb broke my heart. The monument is stunning, but the statues and interior of the tomb was so elegant and beautiful. I’m glad his family is also buried with him. I know from dust we were created and to dust we return, but at least he has the wife and children he loved close to him. Thank you so much for your respectful tone of voice, your love of history, and your love of old buildings and history. The capital building was astounding! The floor treatment, the statuesque light fixtures on the staircase, and the magnificent dome are totally Amazing! Thank you for the tour of the museum. You are gifting all of us with an experience and a sense of history I personally could not have without you. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Annie

As a born and bred Illinoisan who moved away in '89, it was great seeing some places that I haven't been to in years. Thanks for going to Lincoln's tomb. We went to all the Lincoln sights on field trips in school when I was young, but I hadn't been back to his tomb since one of those elementary school field trips. Too bad that Lincoln's home wasn't open for visits. It usually is, but I know it used to be by ticket only. The drone video of Springfield brought back memories also. The tall circular building in the middle used to be a hotel. Unsure if it still is, but that's where I took my NCLEX exam (state board exam for nursing licensure) for two or three whole days back a million years ago. You're correct, there's lots of great history in Springfield which is about the only thing that Illinois has done right. Lincoln would be rolling over in his grave if he could see his great state now.

Totally not worth visiting, we do have the nation's first drive thru though, it's ok nothing too special. Never been in the Lincoln tomb tho, that was cool to see, you can see it from the main road into town going into the run down Northside of town. Surrounded by rentals, crackhouses, and homeless people. That's right Lincolns tomb is in the NEWT side of town, just round the corner from the even more run down east side of town. Good Ol Springfail. You wanna see some cool lincoln stuff, go to new Salem in Petersburg, and maybe stop by the Abe lincoln museum in Athens (if its still open, it used to be part of Abes postal route I believe. I spend alot of time fishing at sangamon river at the Irwin Bridge which lincoln would have crossed almost daily, when the waters really low you can still make out the remains of the old wooden bridge.

As a current Springfield resident, there are two things I hoped you would have done and seen. First thing is that the tomb you were at is actually his second tomb, if you drive down to the bottom of the hill it sits in, you can see the first tomb where many grace robbers attempted to break in and steal his and Mary’s bodies. It’s honestly cooler than the current one imo. The second thing is that I hoped you would have gotten a horseshoe as it’s a Springfield staple! Obeds had them, but the best places are Dublin pub or Darcy’s pint. They are rivals since both claim to be have the original horseshoe recipe. I hope you come back and visit the state fair sometime because in the grandstand, a local funeral home has on display the horse drawn hearse used to carry Lincoln’s body. It’s quite a sight!

I was born and raised in Springfield. It has become a terrible place, the crime and poverty numbers show that. It has become a very dirty unkept town. They keep taking down buildings and putting in parking lots. The governor does not stay in the mansion, the people just paid for. It is a shell of the glory it once was. The new rail line they are putting in will define the bad part of town from the worse part of town. All that Lincoln stuff you see is a scam. Tru walking those areas at night, except directly around the old state capitol. You mentioned the cost of living Life is cheap in Springfield.

Springfieldian here! Did you check out the two shows at the Museum, Lincoln's Eyes and Ghosts in the Library Ghosts is my favorite of the two, and it's really informative about the kind of things that are kept or circulated through them. and it makes much more sense why they'll only let you on the first floor lol. And they do let you go into Lincoln's Home, you just have to be part of a scheduled tour (tickets are free, but they're distributed first come, first serve. Glad you enjoyed yourselves!

First, as a resident of springfield most of my life, I appreciate the reminder of some of the very cool stuff we have here. You tend to forget when you live here. Second, sorry you couldn’t get into his home, it’s a very cool tour, so come back if you pass through! Third, no one was there to tell you to rub Lincoln’s nose at the tomb! You’re supposed to rub it for good luck, that’s why the nose is so shiny. Thanks for the reminder of some of the good stuff in my hometown!

My family and I visited Springfield for a long weekend a few years ago. We went to all the sites and it was one of my favorite vacations. Thanks for showing this, it brought back great memories. We toured the home, but we had to get tickets. They were free but they only allowed a few people at a time in the home. I especially loved the staircase bannister as it is original to the home. I liked to imagine Lincoln walking down touching the same bannister that i touched. Thank you.

Lincolns original tomb was located behind the current tomb at the bottom of the hill. There were also several attempts to steal Lincoln's body as the tomb was being built. The reason he was buried ten feet down. Lincoln's body was viewed by his son years later to confirm it was his father. The body was said to be in remarkable condition due to the number of embalming that were done on the body's travel from Washington to Springfield.

If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of TaekwonJoe the homeless man who likes to do martial arts movements and hip thrusts in front of the cathedral during the day in Springfield. Sometimes he’s doing martial arts, sometimes he doing hip thrusts at traffic as they wait by the light, and other times he’s laying shirtless on the concrete looking directly into the sun. He’s a Springfield landmark for sure.

While there is a fair amount of crime in Springfield, it is mostly confined to a few areas of the city. Where I live there is virtually no crime. While housing prices are low, property taxes are very high. There are lots of nice restaurants in Springfield - politicians have expense accounts! Also some very nice parks and other historic buildings, other than the Lincoln house.

When you were at lincolns tomb and first walked up to it. lincolns bust. you were supposed to rub his nose for good luck. if you notice in your video.
it was very shiny they had to do restoration work on it because people literally rubbed a hole into it over the years. thanks for coming to my hometown.

As a central Illinois native, I have spent many hours in Springfield. I love the Lincoln museum and home and have been to these and the tomb a lot. I also have read many books about Lincoln and live in the 8th circuit area that Lincoln practiced law in. I love the history of this area.

On a local note, then white and black hotel is lovingly called the Prick of the Prairie by us locals. Crime is only high on the south east side of town. When visiting try a Horseshoe sandwich, not good for you, but tastes great! Pritzger lives in Chicago and rarely comes downstate.

In the summer of 1990, I flew to Springfield, Illinois and visited old state capitol, Lincoln home, tomb, law office and etc. My great-great uncle was born in Springfield in the 1840's and maybe his parents (from Hamburg, Germany) saw or met Abraham Lincoln. Mark Weber

Fun Fact. If you ever go back, If you go down the hill right behind his current tomb, you'll find his original tomb where his body was kept. There was an attempt to steal his body and hold it for ransom that was unsuccessful.
