TENNESSEE: Rural Towns Where Life Moves Really Slow That lil log cabin reminds me of Jack Londons old cabin in Oakland, CA. At Jack London Square near the First & Last Chance saloon where he would go to drink. It was still there not too long ago. That place was a hoot. They used to tease people in the restroom, pretending they took a picture of you as you sat. We actually lived in his former house on Foothill Blvd. which was a historical landmark. The plaque was actually stolen and hopefully now its replaced. That home was haunted. We saw and heard some weird stuff. Including the sound of dog walking around - or maybe it was a wolf. We would find really old marbles buried in the backyard. Anyway - I think you said youre heading to Oakland, soon. Hope you make a video.

Another wonderful and informative video! Thank you so much Joe and Nic. So sad to see some of the States you visit having once upon a time beautiful homes, productive factories, shops and schools now going to ruin and decay having been abandoned. The fact that a lot of your videos show nobody walking around says it al! ! Hopefully, in the future, restoration projects could be done as some of those building could still be saved. America is a fascinating country, it has everything and I have always wanted to visit and tour but at 62 and living in Dublin, Ireland I doubt I will ever get there! However, looking at your videos I feel I don't have to go anywhere as I am with you and Nic Thank again, Josh

This may seem like a nitpick, but may I suggest that you use the word ethnic or ethnicity instead of race. I know it's used to mean ethnicity, but that's incorrect because there is only one race of humans on the planet now. Even though I've run into people who looked like, and lived like Neanderthals, I was assured that race of humans is extinct, and they and the Denisovans, were the last of the other races to share the planet with us.

The poverty rate is high but life is slow in many areas of Tennessee. Things aren't too expensive and people live a simple life and the life isn't so controlled by things. Thank you for showing a part of Tennessee. I think Cowan is pronounced Cow - inn ) or is where I'm from, a small Tennessee town on the North Plateau near Kentucky, north of Cookeville-Crossville. That was Dinah Shore in the mural with the pink cadillac

This area is basically my back yard, as I live just across the state line in Alabama. It's my favorite weekend motorcycle riding area- lots of peaceful backroads to explore around Winchester to Lynchburg. Like others have stated, it would have been worth your while to travel the few miles up the mountain to Sewanee. That whole area is amazing.

I live in the area of Granville, Gainesboro, Celina and Livingston. All nice small towns. Celina is a dying town, Gainesboro has one foot on a banana peel, Granville is coming up as a tourist attraction and Livingston is pretty cool and tries to promote events, festivals etc to draw people in. So does Granville.

I grew up right on the Tennessee, Kentucky border. Tennessee is just as much home to me as Kentucky is. People are very country down here and even after traveling the world, I still love it here. Grew up hunting, fishing, riding four-wheelers and playing bluegrass music.

Why is the oil companies ' oldest scam still swallowed by the American public That. 9 cent should be rounded up to the next penny, not truncated down. That makes a huge difference in large gas tanks. Let's get more realistic and more intelligent folks.

I live in this area & grew up around here. I live just across the Alabama stateline. We spend most of our time in Winchester area. Ppl are friendly, not much traffic, Tim's Ford lake is awesome, lots of locally owned restaurants & businesses.

If the average income is about $18, 000 a year, they must have some low rents and cheap houses. Up here in Canada, im making $55, 000 a year and can barely afford a small 1 bedroom apartment where i live.

I spent my childhood in and around Winchester in the 60’s and 70’s. Family is all still there and I get home as often as I can. Winchester has a beautiful town square.
Great videos.

100% processed foods on plastic or styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery makes me sad. I love the US but the food is just depressing.
Edit: wait normal plates and cutlery are fancy now

Two push engines. It's funny how they make it around the mountains on Petticoat junction with one push engine. I suppose they made them better back then. But it got Kate and the girls around.

I live in McMinnville, TN. Base of the Cumberland Plateau. Not the smallest. But rural. I’ve been to Cowan. I have a friend who lives there. Been to Winchester and Lynchburg a few times.
reply

You pronounced Cowan wrong. And the girl on the mural in Winchester is Hunter Girl. She's a country singer, lives in Winchester she was runner up on American Idol in 2022.

Just came back from road trip in Kentucky and Tennessee, interesting that the Court Houses are the most impressive building in the down town. A lot of money spent on Court Houses.

Head about 25miles to the northeast from there and you have my maternal family ancestral hometown of Viola TN. Even smaller than the one you filmed in

The reason the numbers seem so bad in cowan is because of the younger deadbeats/dopeheads who won't work. They drag the numbers WAY DOWN.

Dinah Shore on the mural in Winchester, not Mary Kay. Her television show was sponsored by Chevrolet. See the USA In Your Chevrolet.

Notice that many courthouses south of the Mason Dixon Line have the front door facing south and the backdoor facing north. Hmmm!
