Being a local from Millerstown PA a trip 40 minutes up 322 i hate harrisburg. In the city anyways. I feel very uncomfortable with all the crime and homeless and all that but maybe its just me being a country boy and not being used to all the big city. Everytime im there i cannot stand it. All my buddies always hate going down through Allison Hill and Cameron Street, both very shady. I only go there to go to a few stores down that way because since that entire surrounding area of Harrisburg has a lot of different stores i head down there a lot. Right now i live in selinsgrove but i still go to harrisburg because of the amount of cool places to go. Lots to do. One of my favorite places to eat around that area is Yankee Doodle Restaurant. One of my favorite places to shop is Bass Pro Shops, as well as Zoomania. Lots of great fishing around the area in general in central Pennsylvania and the state in general. Thats probably my favorite part of living here.

As a proud local who lives in the outskirts on the East Shore, and works on the West Shore (I drive through the city every day to and from work, I really enjoyed this video. Our city gets a bad reputation because of the bankruptcy in 2011, mismanagement from politicians in the past, and the crime of certain areas, but it is an amazing city. There is lots to do, close to all of the major cities (Philadelphia, Baltimore, NYC. Even closer to the history rich areas of Hershey, Gettysburg and Lancaster County. We have the arts (ballet, museums, we have sports teams (City Island, we have industry (Commonwealth of PA, we have outdoors (state & local parks are everywhere, just to name a few. The cost of living is low, the job market is booming, and lots of new development popping up all over the mid-state. I really feel that people don't always give Harrisburg a shot, because it's a great place to live and I have never felt unsafe.

Even though I've lived here for so long, I still find myself discovering new things about this city! While I have indeed retreated to the suburbs, I still find myself going in from time to time, also not to mention the City Island that you were crossing from in the beginning of the video!
Susquehanna River may be old, but unfortunately it's not the most ideal, specifically because there's been quite a few times where it's been very shallow for a river, making boating almost too dangerous at times. It's still an awesome view though.
Been a little while since I've been inside the Capitol or the State Museum, but I have awesome memories of those places.

It was only until the night late 1960s that federal court cases required the suburban municipalities to accommodate all types of housing and land uses. But during this period the city was largely ghettoized. There was a lack of investment and housing and businesses in The city. Gradually you began to see multifamily housing units built in the suburbs mostly on what is called the East shore area East at the Susquehanna river. Saved a bunch of people a visit there in time, energy and money to watch this nice visual tour of a place like Harrisburg which is a bit of a hike from anywhere to get to and although quite interesting not a huge amount there to attract someone to make the effort. This video captures much (I've been there) and did it well-- very interesting and relaxed. It terms of Joe's assessment that it looks safe, well, visit some of the dicey neighborhoods shown but do it on foot and at night when the denizens like peepers come out and someone might modify that assessment (once released from the ER.

Im from the rival city of Lancaster 50 miles east. Im way too familiar with Harrisburg and the city, none of this was surprising. We joke that you can only safely walk Front st. and Main. The city is slowly recovering and i like to think the competition we provide in the South Central part of the state is lighting a fire under Harrisburg's ass too.

The new modern house that you were showing when you were uptown is where my relatives used to live in the 50's, 60's, and 70's they were very wealthy and were from New York. They owned a Dress Factory in the Allison Hill area The Harrisburg Childrens Dress Factory where they made Kate Greenaway Dresses, I have lived in the Hbg area all of my life.

The major population decline in the city of Harrisburg started after hurricane Agnes and flood in June 1972. By the time Mayor Reed came along the city was a dump. 6: 45 you are walking on locust street. Anyway, Reed brought back some tax base to the city since the mid 80s but his bad monetary decisions erased all the good he did.

I last really lived in Harrisburg in 1977. Unfortunately, the city hasn't changed much. Quite a shame since the city has so much potential. I think I toured the capitol building a couple of times as a kid with my school. The State Museum of Pennsylvania is second to none.
I've got to go back and take another look.

Harrisburg is the capitol of homeless thanx to the rail systems that bus hobos in by the hundreds everyday drive down Cameron St. N see if you're not solicited evety red light. next time go down 13th St. looks like you chose to make your vid at 7am to beat the ghetto rush huh

Harrisburg is a dump. Theres a reason all the middle class folk fled to the suburbs and its just the ghetto lower class that stuck around. I grew up in the 717 my whole life and Harrisburg always looked like some district 13 failed city. I dont remember a day of it looking otherwise.

If you ever make it back to Harrisburg area. I think you would really like Chambersburg, Sunbury, Halifax Minersville & Pottsville. Minersville & Pottsville being an old coal town. All these towns have beautiful old architecture. So many small towns along the Susquehanna River too

From Pennsylvania, live just east of Hershey. Biggest things that affected PA industry and population decline were the loss of Bethlehem Steel and alot of the coal mines in northern PA. Still a beautiful state alot of cool small towns. Alot of Dutch and Irish influence in this state.

you have no way of knowing for sure that the earth is that old. So anything you have to say can promptly be ignored until you come up with solid proof of the age of the earth AND DONT TELL ME THAT NONSNESE THAT SOME SCIENTISTS TOLD YOU THAT FOR THEY DID NOT WITNESS THE EVENT.

I never believe people when they tell me how supposedly scary or unsafe a city is. I lived in the city of Harrisburg during and after the Mayor Reed era and never had an issue. People told me I was crazy for living in the city, but whatever. I enjoyed my time there.

Sensible citizens need to get employment, attend meetings at the city councils, zoning boards, school boards, precincts, courts, election polls, legislators and Gov't agencies. The jobs pay well and can help make a difference. Regain the country 1 job at a time

I would have went to the husk ball fair. There you can see a lot of rose cleaneries and raskers. I had one of these at one time that would stroll hinge on a talk wire and then I had to flair it right before I stuck it in. It was an amazing fact driver.

The high peaked roofs in Allison Park were examples of American Gothic which was very common in the 1905-1925 period and succeeded and overlapped the Tudor Revival which featured exposed beams and stucco. Row houses are very common in urban PA.

I lived in Harrisburg for a while. I would often go to the path near that bridge and sit on the steps by the water and just relax. It's weird that I just randomly came across this video and right away you showed exactly where I'd hangout at. Neat.

You should have showed the bad part of uptown harrisburg where it seems almost like for every 2 homes, it's 5 that's been burnt or just abandoned. Also, where I grew up for the last 26yrs hall manor, aka the manor. It's got a lot better now.

Goodness gracious! I wish you wouldn't show mouth-watering food in your excellent videos! I often watch them way past my mealtimes and the food just gets my stomach a-churning long before I can quell my hunger pangs.

Allison Hill is the only rough section and it's not that bad now days. I worked on the Capital renovation in the 90s and ate lunch by the entrance on the steps every day pre 9-11 days
