To me, a small poncho tarp is part of the advance tarping 301 class. A larger tarp is easier to use and roomier. A Six Moons Designs Gatewood cape with their Serenity NetTent would look/feel much more like a tent than the MLD option which is pure tarping at it's best or worst depending on your point of view.
As I cowboy camp year round, carrying a bivy is too useful. And the tarp is the lightest option which also goes well with my bivy as part of the shelter system. Hence I tarp. Tried other things, but somehow also come back to it. Bugs and critters have never been a big issue in my 14+ years of cowboy camping/tarping. Though I do check for ants and signs of burrowing in the ground before stopping for the night.

I tried this and I tried that, inflatable pillows, little foam pillows, nothing worked for me. Finally I found the most comfortable solution for me: a plain old cotton pillowcase. When I hike I stash my clothes inside it and when it s time to sleep I can easily adjust how firm or high I want it to be. And it doesn t slide off my mattress! Isn't the shot of the poncho tarp at 1: 41 from a while back? I think it's downright dangerous, because if you run into another hiker, you risk them dying from laughter; ) On a more serious note, IMHO one of the universal truths is that anything combo winds up being not so good at one (often both) of the things it claims to be.

It seems that using your raingear as your shelter would be too limiting in rainy weather. If you get to camp and have to remove the poncho to set up as shelter, you're exposed to the elements while setting up and while doing any camp chores like getting water, cooking( if you don't want to cook where you sleep, etc.

I like using a poncho tarp with an emergency tarp underneath to help reflect back body heat in the winter. I ve used that in Maine when it s gotten down to 9 degrees and some snow on the ground.
Though I can understand the appeal of having a tent in the winter. Tarps in the summer are much easier to carry.

I took a king-size pillowcase and sewed the end shut and cut and hemmed it on one side. I slip it over the end of my sleeping pad and put my pillow in it. Keeps my pillow from slipping off the mat. Also keeps those inflatable pillows from sticking to my face in the summer. Not that much extra weight either.

You re on one of sections of the Pinhoti Trail that I ve done in the past couple of years. I m certainly glad we didn t have to deal with all the downfall you guys have experienced. I can t dedicate the time to hike Pinhoti all at once, so just taking it a section or two at a time.

I still think the biggest problem with the poncho tarp is that if it's raining and you're ready to stop for the night, you have to take it off to set up your shelter. You get rain gear or a shelter but never both at the same time. That's an automatic fail for me.
