Cell Phones & Back-Up Battery Chargers Dirk: So far I'm just day hiking, what do I know? But I put my phone in power saving mode, and darken the screen as much as possibe, the screen uses most of the power. I believe there also is an emergency mode also, will explore that.
Uncle Leo Laporte was just mentioning Feature (dumb) phones, some can go 3-4 days, may be worth looking into if you don't need all the apps etc. Pick one up at Ralph's grocery store (Trak phone etc.
I have a Nomad 7 solar charger, dog days of summer it works very well, so so in the winter. That said, I can't see taking it on a hike where every ounce counts.
Carrying an extra charged battery (or two) might be an option)
Personally I just dial back my needs and live without it If I have to. May or may not carry a power bank. Most likely just a wall charger and short usb cable, I try to be minimalist. I'm more interested in nature than tech toys.
My pet peeve is the rudeness of this culture, that apparently assume everybody needs to be exposed to there ignorance and phone yack: trains, libraries, restaraunts etc while stuffing their faces, I'm going hiking!

Dixie, I love your vids (since Aaron does his thing, they are masterpieces, your book and DIY and all the stuff you do. Thanks a lot for that, makes planning my 2019 AT thru-hike a pleasure. One question I always wanted to ask and did not find the right place to do so:
Considering that you take very smooth videos of yourself talking while hiking along, I'd love to know how you hold your phone (assuming it is your iPhone6) while you do that. Special technique? From the few stumbles and falls you took I assume there's no gimbal involved. Care to share your expertise on that? Or even have someone else take a video of you doing one of your monologues in stride?
Greets from Switzerland! I look forward to see your CDT footage! Ray

Anker is awesome. Being a gamer/gps gamer I use a few different. I could see why most would only carry a 600 instead of a 1200 or 2700. Those tend to way quite a bit more. If a person could handle the extra weight and likes to take pictures/video I'd say bring 2 600 or 1 1200/2700. Would allow for more footage of their thru hike for their family and friends. But weight would be a concern.
I'd say getting into Maine I wouldn't be surprised you're losing service. Lots of forest with no people means little reason for a cell tower. :)

Hi Dixie. Thanks for the info. Would love to hear more about vlogging and uploading/editing videos. would also like to hear about usage of GPS on trail and getting daily weather information. Love all your vlogs. I followed 2015 all the way thru. Cant wait for e book. I'm retiring in a few years and planning a thru hike and you were my final inspiration that i can do that. Thank you so much and keep the vlogs coming!

Dixie. Love all your videos. Great job. You mentioned making a video on how you video upload to Dropbox and put them on YouTube. That would be a great video. I'm going to get a IPhone 6 before my hike next year and I'd love to know how you do it. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

This will reveal my age. how many hours worth of video footage can your iPhone hold. approx? You mentioned downloading your video to Dropbox. was this done to remove the videos from your phone? Lastly, how did you edit your vlog before posting it on YouTube?

Thanks for sharing how you did your video's. Your IPhone 6 does a great job. I have a Samsung notebook 5. I'll test it out and see if it does as well. Does your phone have good battery life? Thanks

Thanks for more useful 411. Yes, Outlet Ninja, PLEASE do a feature on creating/editing /uploading vlogs as there seems to be obvious differences in how some hikers videos come across.

Buy two half size battery packs, rather than one full size battery pack. You can charge your battery packs in half the time by charging both half size battery packs at the same time.
