I cant wait till I'm old enough I am in high school now but hiking the AT has been my dream since I heard about Backpacking in middle school I still have to wait another 6 years (to finish school) but I cant wait. Luckily its only another 2 years till I can start backpacking on the weekends. sigh This is why kids want to grow up.

Shall we all discuss the elderly woman who got lost in the AT and then died in her tent of starvation? Yeh, lets not give these Juvenile pep talks to people IGNORING reality. ELderly people got no business pretending they got the bones and muscles and stamina of a 20 year old. They never will. Lets give REALISTIC encouragement.

I started becoming interested in thru hiking a few weeks ago, and I've been non stop researching and watching your videos, Dixie! Your thru hike of the AT had me in tears, I felt SO inspired that I set a goal to thru hike the AT in 2022! I'm so excited, and I just wanted to say thank you for being a badass woman.

Thank you Dixie. Now I know I am making the right decision to start hiking in my 40s. Seeing the people not in healthyest condition and older than me. I now know I did not wait to long. I really would like to hike from Mexico to Canada and Georgia to Maine. I didn't wait to long. Thanks

Thank you so much for making this vid! Years later I'm watching and getting so inspired by the stories you told. I love to hike but am overweight and just starting to get into shape. I have a lot more confidence now to try more difficult hikes!

Some of us can't. I'm a lifelong diabetic. If I walk very far, I will get blisters, which will most likely end in foot amputations. As much as I would like to hike the trail, I'm not willing to part with my feet to do it.

I am moderatly handicapped and go to physical therapy in hopes of learning to walk again, tried treking poles close maybe a possibility. I have done a lot of backpacking over the years so the apt is still on my bucket list.

it came from the myth that only young people can succeed. I think that if you love your life, you can succeed at any time. So if you do not know if this trail is for you, first ask yourself: do you love your life?

what about people of color? Did you encounter any in your journey? I would like to do this someday but not sure me hiking in thru back country will cause additional harm based on the color of my skin.
