AT Section Spotlight: Bennington, VT to Manchester Center, VT
video description
So I'd add that if you haven't spent much time in VT, picking the right season to go is perhaps even more important than it is with most other states. For hiking, most people will say late summer to early fall is the best time to go, but I'd extend it to mid summer too (don't let the bugs scare you off. Also, don't necessarily discount spring either. Yes, this is mud season in VT. But VT is having lower than average snow in recent years. In a low snow year, mud season can be very short and often times the bugs haven't hatched that early in the year. So spring can be pretty amazing hiking weather in VT if it's a light mud season. Just pay attention to the winter VT had that year. But, if snow was normal to high, then yes, probably best to avoid VT until mid-late summer.

One of my favorite sections in this area was from Gifford Woods State Park, VT to Hanover, NH. The park let us leave our car there since we stayed the night before starting our hike and then we hopped a local commuter bus in Hanover (after filling our bellies at Lou's) and it dropped us back at the park. easy, convenient and economical. This section had Thunder Falls, our first ladder on a trail, The Lookout Cabin, and we stopped at a bakery on VT12 and stuffed our faces with pie and Cokes. Some beautiful hiking through a combination of woods and open meadows. Stayed at the oldest shelter on the AT at Happy Hill. Just a great section.

I have only just started training for the end to end challenge however the AT does look very tempting. Especially because of the community feel and even if you hike solo, you still have other people around.
The end to end challenge is only 1200 miles however you do not get any trail magic or places a bit more dedicated to the hiking community. It is pretty much you start and you are on your own for the following 2 to 3 months. Also because there is no specific trail, it is extremely unlikely you would ever meet up with any fellow hikers.
I think after the end to end I should be fit enough to have a look at the AT but for now.

Hello! Quick question, how fast does time go on the trail? As in your perspective of time. I went on a vacation in Florida for almost 2 weeks but because it was a different scene, did different stuff, by the end of the trip it felt like I was gone for almost a month even though less than half that time had passed. In ordinary life the days blur together because it's the same day, over and over. Does doing something different each day on Trail make the days go by slower because you are living in the moment?

Great section of trail Dixie. I love Vermont and have a lot of history with it. Taught my kids to ski there. Spent many a weekends travelling there. My daughter was married at the Equinox in Manchester. Just a beautiful area of the country. Bennington is a great town. Would highly encourage anyone to spend time there in the area especially in the fall. I definitely will consider doing this section hike! Thanks much!

Dixie, How many Patreon sponsors do you have now? I am thinking that to get you through the PCT it will take about 1, 000 at the 1 per month level -- which, for your weekly video, figures out to be 25 cents per sponsor per week, unlimited views. That's my kind of education and entertainment value. LOL Please provide a link for popcorn. PS Vermont, beautiful, beautiful. Thanks for the spotlight.

Thank you Ms. Wonderful,
I really enjoy all the videos that you have been posting. Tell us more about your plans for 2017.
1. Will you be out at trail days for all your stalkers to meet you?
2. Will you be a trail angle in 2017, sharing the magic?
3. It would be gre8t if you were to just stop by and say Go go, you can do it.

Heya, I grew up in Bennington, was a Green Mountain Club Member and helped maintain the trails at Rt 9 North. Later, I became a summer Long Trail Patrol member, while in Forestry school at UVM from '77 to '81, glad you enjoyed Vermont, it truly is a special place!
