I have been thinking about a large section hike at some point, but have a throu hike planned in 2 years. (man, that seems like a long time) I live in West Palm Beach and my thought on a large section hike was to take Amtrak up to NYC and take a regional commuter out to the AT. I have friends and fam in NYC so that's a bonus. The AT has its own train stop but is only serviced on the weekends. Then going hiking south to Harper's Ferry where there is a train station with both MARC and Amtrak into D. C. I have friends in D. C. so again a bonus. Then Amtrak back down to WPB, FL. Not sure how many towns on or near the trail have train station for shorter or different hikes using a similar method.

This was a really useful and informational vid. As usual: -) Don't want to sound like a Debbie Downer, but there's scuttlebutt going around about Thrus of the PCT may not be able due to the record snowfall in the Sierras. Apparently there's like 9' of snow in the passes, but with snowshoes I don't see why it can't be done. Of course I haven't done it yet so my opinion ain't relevant. Hyperlight Mountain Gear's email newsletter was focused on that subject, so I thought I'd throw it out there as a thing to think about: -)
Eagerly awaiting the next edition. :)

An important thing to consider also is getting to the trail for either a NOBO or SOBO will be one thing. Trying to return home after months if not days on the AT, you are going to smell quite ripe (or like a homeless person. If someone is going to collect you, tell them to bring something so maybe you can have a wash and spray deodorant. It would be unfair to subject then to your. aroma: -)

I hope you can answer this question. I went last weekend and hiked the approach trail and came back home the next day. I don't leave for my Thur hike until march 12th. I really don't want to hike the approach trail again so if I have a ride there, can anyone just drive to the trail head? Does it take a 4x4 to get there? I've looked it up but can't find much on it.

I know this is old, but this is a subject that few cover. I recently thought about your idea. Would just leave my vehicle somewhere near the end, and get a ride back to the beginning. For long hikes would put in Storage. Also figured it was a good way to pull me up the trail. After I long hike, always nice to see the vehicle at the end

Thanks, for the as always- don't fret attitude that you always radiate with on ech and every post that you do. You used a Galaxy last hike now an Iphone. can I ask why the change? I wanted to get a smartphone last month but had to delay it. Glad that I did. I am not savy with smartphones----yet.

Hi Dixie, it seems like the ATC and other groups are really pusing the Flip Flop these days. I am considering it for 2018, and just wanted to ask that you include your thoughts on Flip Flop in addition to NOBO/SOBO in your discussions.
Thanks for the videos!

For PCT and AT, it seems like everybody starts south and heads north. Why is that?
I'd rather start at the top and work my way down, but I also would rather start in the fall and end in warm southern weather. I think most people are spring or summer hikers.
