2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Review - Why The Cross Is The Best Corolla Ever Built

The Corolla name has been around for decades and it's largely followed the same formula: Design a sedan, then use the basic building blocks to cook up a hatchback, a wagon (that the USA will never get since we hate wagons apparently, and on occasion, a 2-door coupe. But since this is the 21st century and we love all things SUV. this time we got a Corolla Cross. At first glance, the Cross doesn't look too special. It kind of looks like a RAV4 Shirinky Dink and the interior looks like a 110% scale of a regular Corolla, but there's more than that going on because Toyota stuffs a 196 HP hybrid system under the hood. Yep, one of only two AWD hybrids in the subcompact segment (the other is oddly a Toyota hybrid system with a Subaru engine in the Crosstrek, the Corolla Cross shines as a powerful ane efficient option. With more power and better performance than all but a handful of options, and the best AWD economy in the segment, the only real question left is: why does the boring gas model exist Here's why we don't talk about reliability much: And resale value Same thing:

Great review as usual Alex, and I agree wholeheartedly with most of it. You didn't mention brake feel. Toyota has been improving with the current-generation Prius and Camry. I'm curious whether the brakes get a little grabby at parking lot speeds in this model. The Corolla Cross Hybrid made its debut for the '23 model year. Your comments about the hybrid system in the upcoming RAV4 make me think that the Corolla Cross is NOT using what Toyota refers to as its 5th-generation hybrid synergy drive. So in my mind the real question is to buy this now, or wait and see how much more they will ask for a RAV4 SE Hybrid AWD.

Pardon me if I've left a similar comment on a different video before, but why isn't Honda competing in this segment. at all I would be interested in a compact hybrid crossover that had the interior of my 2024 Civic but got 45 mpg, but Honda only offers the HR-V, which barely competes with the standard Corolla Cross. You can't get rear vents or charge ports in an HR-V at any price. Basically, I want the features of the ZR-V hybrid, but in the U. S. But Honda won't sell it, even as an Acura (and why do they think people will pay to get an Acura just for things like heated steering wheels or rear air vents)

Alex and Travis, The slipshod routing 7: 34 of the high voltage cable to the rear motor and the restricted rear seat legroom prevent the Corolla Cross Hybrid from receiving an A rating. That's a real pity in a subcompact CUV that
absolutely aces 8: 28 the Travis Test for rear seat headroom. No discussion of the 'Best Corolla ever built' is complete without reference to the GT-S hatch and numerous Corolla wagon variants built through the years.
When it comes to affordable Toyota CUVs, a lower trim of the RAV4 Hybrid is a better choice than a high trim Corolla Cross.

3: 35 alex, I think you're missing the point. I'm pretty sure Toyota knows that hybrid is before 0 emission. I don't think that's the point they're trying to get across. Even though it's a hybrid, it's just there as a reminder and not related to the literal vehicle itself. It's to let people know the direction. The company is trying to go in, and its ambitions to eventually have 0 emissions vehicles. I think that's the point of the badge. and not so much that it's a hybrid and not an electric vehicle.
reply

3: 38 an entirely zero-emissions lineup would’ve been very limited. It simply not possible for Toyota and it doesn’t serve the entire customer base. Going beyond the concept of zero-admissions only, Toyota offers HEV, PHEV, ICE options to round out its entire corporate offerings. In this way, I believe they adopted the beyond zero description. People who chose hybrids and electrics are helping us get to a zero-emissions future. I don’t think it’s that strange.

The hybrid is the only thing the corolla cross has going for it. The crosstrek is a wagon. The trax is a wagon. Im tired of wagons being called suvs. Whats most interesting in this category is how the leaders are the trailblazer and seltos/kona.
Edit. The mx30 is a mazda 3 with a lift kit and im equally as tired of hatches with lift kits as i am wagons with lift kits

Alex, for the transitions, you should do star wipes next time!
Homer: OK, from here we star-wipe to a glamour-shot of Flanders paying his bills. Then we star-wipe to Flanders brushing his
Lisa: Daaaaad! There are other wipes besides star wipes.
Homer: Why eat hamburger when you can have steak
Lisa: I'm taking my name off this thing.

I would get a Mazda CX50 hybrid over the Corolla Cross. The prices between the two models overlap and you will still be getting a Toyota hybrid system in the Mazda. There are currently more incentives with the Mazda bringing prices down to Corolla Cross prices or cheaper. That and I just think the CX50 looks better, but that's just my opinion.

Its unfortunate that Toyota has pretty much abandoned mechanical AWD for many of its crossovers. They just do not perform well in snow. They are fine for people that that don't live in the mountains. But it pushes those of us in the mountains to either larger vehicles, or other brands. This is otherwise a nice improvement over the previous gen car.

Ford Maverick. Hybrid AWD. I'm getting close to 50mpg almost everyday. The AWD is a mechanical AWD. Can't say enough about the Maverick. Best car I've ever owned. My experience with Subaru Hybrids is that. they're not really hybrids. A lot kore money for a small increase in mileage. BTW, lose the flashing transitions. too strobe like

My wife has owned the initial model, 2024 Hybrid AWD, and it has been absolutely flawless. To everyone complaining about how noisey or loud it is, how often are you actually stomping on the gas pedal
Otherwise it's very quiet and runs in EV mode during stop lights. Great fuel economy, about 36mpg highway and about 48 city.

The electrical connector being in the trunk makes me think Toyota did it as a fix for the known issue/recall with the Rav4 hybrids’ connector failure due to corrosion, as theirs is exposed, under the car. I wish they had just left it under the car, but insulated it and given us a spare. Toyota is usually very good about that.
reply

Best is very subjective here.
Most fun would be something like the GRC. Most reliable I’d say a 9th gen Corolla. Best looking would be the 10th maybe 12th gen (not including the cross. The one thing this does better is its cargo with AWD. It’s still painfully slow and lacks many options the competitors offer.

I really dislike the half-baked eAWD systems most hybrids use, thankfully Subaru is taking their hybrids seriously and giving them their traditional symmetrical AWD system. Sooo if you need an awd hybrid that will actually perform like an AWD vehicle off (ish) road or in inclement weather, go with the Subaru.

Alex, please let Toyota know that we all think they are lazy and inconsiderate for deleting the emergency spare tire. They could have moved the wiring and easily installed the emergency tire. Some of us travel hundreds of miles and a fix flat won't work. We need to have an emergency spare tire.
reply

Hmm this: Good mileage, and (I believe) 1500 lb towing vs 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. Worse mileage, but higher ground clearance and mechanical AWD with unknown towing capability. Looking to tow a small and light teardrop trailer and possibly a futility trailer for brush and such.
reply

While I appreciate the reliability and the great MPGs, that super cheap interior plus that tacked on 50 dollar tablet in the middle makes this a no-go for me. The lack of a spare tire is a huge negative as well. Have fun being towed to a tire shop when you inevitably get a flat.

I owned a 1st gen Kia Niro PHEV to 14, 500 miles & 2nd gen Niro HEV to 24, 200 miles. Both reliable (each had one item replaced under warranty and got exceptional mpg. Niro offers nicer inteior& more features. Not saying Niro is better to Corolla Cross, but worth a look

The only downside to this is the fact that you have to deal with Toyota dealers. Not sure what has happened post pandemic but all Toyota dealers I've worked with feel like they are hot st and are incredibly rude. The Toyota Tax is real and you got to pay the Troll Toll.
reply

The loss of a knob for the volume is a shame, should of kept one like the did for the climate control. I know for the spare tire there are aftermarket add ons you can do that can allow a spare tire, that you need to buy yourself. In canada the top end is almost 50K
