Is Being The Best Luxury Deal Enough? 2020 Infiniti QX50

Bargain luxury is truly an oxymoron, but what about value luxury? Infiniti's main push with the 2020 QX50 is that you get a snazzier cabin than most of the competition for less and it's bundled with a big back seat and large cargo area. The QX50 has the looks to win, but does it have the substance? Let's find out digitaldoc100: CVT for a luxury vehicle does not make any sense, and the sales of the QX50 reflect that. Needs a torque converter auto. The VC turbo is interesting, and has some potential, but so far makes an unexceptional amount of power with a middling fuel economy. Therefore, the phrase about 'Neither be the first, nor the last' applies here, and would wait to see if version 2. 0 of the 2. 0t engine makes the difference. On the other hand, if this powertrain found its way to the next Rogue redesign (after all, based on the Altima, at a lower price, it would be more compelling.

I am tired of car manufacturers twisting the data around to show how economical the CVTs are. As usual, there is more details and they are just choosing the ones that fit their agenda. The torque in a CVT (the pulley and belt type) is transferred by a very small layer of lubricant between the pulley and the belt. For constant speed and engine revs scenario, it is not as efficient as AT with a clutch inside the torque converter, standard manual or dual-clutch trans. CVTs also have a lower gear ratio, which is comfortably omitted during all the hype. I personally like the way CVT drive, if they connected to an engine that is strong enough. I do not care about the lack of gear shifts. Saying that I drive a lot in the mountains with my family and CVT does great there. It does wine during engine breaking but I do not care much. Reliability is frighting to me though. For steady long distances on the motorway, CVT is not as good as it is sold.

Thanks Alex. Great review. My take. This QX suffers from the same BAD trend of making the stance very low. This looks more like a hatchback, than SUV. I like to sit up higher (much higher. But I do really like the simple, clear, easy to read instrument cluster with physical dials for Tacho and speedo. Much better than the terrible newer instrument cluster designs that manufactures are coming out with. The rest of the dashboard is disappointing. since you basically have two LCD screens to controls things. Just sticking to simple, clear physical (oversized) knobs and physicals control of 15 - 20 years ago - would have been much better.

Great job Alex on comparing it to its biggest rival, the Acura RDX. Happy you went into great scintillating the two. No luxury car should have a CVT and that really hurts the engine here. The transmission and the engine never seem to be on the same page. Actual real work efficiency ends up being just average form the segnent. EPA numbers are never observed. Infiniti is a dead brand walking. Would not by any of Infiniti's dated offerings. Shame what Nissan/Infiniti have turned into.

If I were shopping in this segment, I would take you with me to the lot. Auto and truck designs offer too many trade offs. You always feel like you have been shortchanged in losing one option against gaining another. As the model designs go through their life cycle, the manufacturers move the options adding and subtracting even between trim levels. Choosing a vehicle has become more confusing than tax law.

50 mph is not nearly enough to have a good sense of noise isolation. The noise level is a critical measure for making a decision on choosing a car. This is very, very good that in all of your reviews you pay attention to this, but it would be much more helpful if you do this on a freeway with concrete pavement (which is noisy) driving at least 70 mph.

Another strong review. Infiniti is lost as a brand, much like Mazda and Acura. There is a lot to like about the car, but it's not best in class at anything. It's only advantage is price. That strategy can only take you so far. So much money spent on that engine for dubious results. They need to adopt an identity asap and design cars to match it.

The NX could really just go away. Lol. The 5 row RX is a better buy and more closer to the size of the normal competition of that class and quality. The NX almost seems like it's at the low end or a tweener. Even the UX seems like a better buy than an NX quality wise if you don't prioritize size; the hybrid versions are close in terms of power too

is it only me who hates touch screens in the cars. i think they are useless. the point of infotaiment is to be easy and keep your eyes on the road at all times but lately car makes are making sure to change that. Please every car maker keep the rotary knobs like this infinity and bmw etc. not everyone likes to finger their screens: (

Hi Alex, thank you for the great review. I have to say, the new graphics is really nice but doesn't quite suite your down-to-earth kind of characteristics in my opinion. Also the font is a bit too small to view on the phone in portrait mode. It is nice to see you doing something new. Best wish in this difficult time.
