Congratulations to this reviewer as being one out of only two organizations to do a worthy truck review. However, just as is the case with TFL, GM is being let off the hook on a couple of huge points that are bad for their customers and frankly deceptive. Firstly, it should be stated emphatically, that Chevy and GMC marketers should not be getting away with declaring that a particular engine in a truck segment is a base engine, when it is not the base engine in the lower trims. The fact that the 2. 7L turbo is the standard engine in the LT and RST (39K and up) for Silverado 1500 and comparable trims in Sierra, but are not even available in the lower trims does NOT make this engine a true, base engine; where a full-size base price is under 30K MSRP. The reason it cant be a base is that a base should be available at a base price, but the way GM tries to manipulate the segment for their own benefit, what you end up with is a new engine in a new truck that is thousands of dollars more than what a Ford customer can get any of their four gas engines for, because with Ford, one can get any configuration XL or XLT with any of their four gas engines cheaper than the lowest-priced LT double cab 2. 7L turbo 4 (except for single cab short bed not available with the 3. 5L Ecoboost and the customer s limited to 3. Additionally, with F150, all 4 gas engine choices available at all price points are far more advanced and newer than the base engines in the Chevy and GMC lineup, and all but their base is mated to a ten speed. This means that a customer can actually choose, for instance, an optional 2. 7L Ecoboost-powered F150 mated to a ten speed and mpg estimate of 20/26/22 and 400 peak ft-lb torque in a truck for around 31. 5K including destination, whereas the cheapest Silverado or Sierra with their so-called base engine starts at least 7. 5K higher. Even if comparing an equal XLT trim with an equal configuration Super Cab, Fords 2. 7L twin turbo V6 has a competitive price. The media should be calling GM out on this, because what they are doing is claiming that the new 2. 7L turbo 4 should be compared to the Ram 3. 6L Penstar with eTorque and Fords 3. 3L V6 with dual fuel injection, and using the fake-news proclamation that its a base engine, when in fact, it is not a base engine, because its not an engine available in a base truck. Secondly, in this video, they put up an EPA mpg estimate chart that showed the 4. 3L V6 estimates in the previous GM-branded a truck and those numbers are now invalid, as the new truck with that carryover 4. 3L V6 mated to a six speed loses 3 mpg as compared to the old truck; 17 combined, compared to 20 combined, respectively. So looking at it this way, the new turbo 4 actually gets up to 4 mpg higher than the 4. 3L, and so if the 2. 7L turbo were a true base engine, then it would represent value to the consumer, but since it is not available and since the new body is such a gas guzzler, then it must be stated that this truck is a huge disappointment, but the power trains are actually very good. But since no media outlet is writing about such topics, then I must assume, they are not representing the consumer like they should be.

I dont see how the price to manufacture and put in this 4 cylinder motor with a turbo is a good investment for gm. Without a doubt dealerships are going to upsell this motor and make it seem like the newest and greatest thing and many people will buy it. In the long run I see it being unreliable and not much resale value since its a full size truck with small capabilities. They shouldve used this for the Colorado. People are going to stress this motor by towing and also lug it when taking off. I feel this will cost GM tons of money in warranty and possibly recalls. Not a smart move for a full size. If youre loaded climbing a hill and have to hold this at 6k rpm vs a v6 or v8 at 3 to 4k rpm itll likely overheat and be worn out FAST where the others will last

I remember when all these downsized turbocharged gasoline engines were coming out and autoblogs (who regurgitate corporate advertising bullet points than do any technical research on their own) hailed these drivetrains as efficient like a diesel and the future of automotive engine design. Guess what? Theyre not that efficient. Especially with a heavy foot or while towing/hauling. I mean Ford and GM just introduced large displacement gasoline engines in heavy duty trucks because they are more fuel efficient under load than small turbocharged engines so tow a boat with these engines at your wallets peril.

Theres no way in hell Id finance one. Just buy a cheap used truck. Never fall into the trap of buying a new vehicle. 0. Financing something that depreciates is incredibly dumb. 1. They all do the same thing. 2. They get the same mpg. 3. You can buy a 2000-5000 truck that can last for years. Rinse and repeat. 4. You dont need a new truck. 5. You cant afford a new truck. 6. Never buy a new truck7. You can only afford a new truck if money is not an issue for you e. g. you have millions. Poor people have no business buying new if they havent made it yet. Itll only make you more broke than you are now.

It blows my mind how much research and development goes into these engines meanwhile I dont know a single soul that would buy a Silverado with that engine. The answer is always 6. 2. Offer that in every trim level if you want to give the people what they want General Motors. They cant put the 10 speed with that because it would constantly be searching for a gear. What people dont understand about all this low-end torque is thats only under boost. The engine is under in immense amount of stress during that. Throw a trailer on the back of that and Ill bet you could get the turbo to glow

It would take a complete idiot to buy this piece of garbage. Slip-able camshafts after 70, 000 miles with poor maintenance that is common these days. With GM having problems with the 3. 6 timing chains as well as the ecotech having timing chain problems, are the really going to convince previous customers that this is going to be dependable or reliable. Starting my day replacing a a/c condenser in a 2014 Silverado with 64, 000 miles with the usual defect where the welds attach the drier tube. This same truck scanned had 36 codes in 18 modules. Sorry GM, why cant you do better?

Good review A lot of people are bashing this engine for its small displacement and turbocharging. Heres my theory on it, this engine is not designed to be a heavy hauler but more of a daily driver for the average truck owner and being that they dont ever tow or haul much(if any, I think it was a smart move on GMs part to offer it. This engine will probably be more popular than some think. Its most likely that it wont be overworked but driven for economy, which from the reviews that Ive seen, its doing well so far. I could be totally wrong here but time will tell.

Im tired of this 4cyl turbo trend V8s have torque on demand. Yeah no surprise the eco boost is better. Yeah I have bought chevys but I wouldnt buy one new but the SS got my attention because I couldnt buy a ducking charger and Im a Dad with a peanut seat in the back and I wanted something I could ring on sometimes and LS baby Yeah Also its a daily because I wanted a cool dads car but if I got another truck Id get another 1500 Hemi I had one it was fun. Lots of power lots of torque I like the way it looked still most American American truck in my opinion.

No body should mistake this for something other than what it is, marketing hype and grow up and understand that there are no free rides. I have had a whole bunch of chevies over the years and older is always better. The horse power, fuel economy and torque numbers look great, put I had no problems going to the lumber yard and getting a bunk of 2x6s into the back of my 92 burb and getting them to the job cite. You can gold plate 3 old chevies for the price of one of these very hard to maintain and repair gems.

Brings new meaning to the term I could have had a V8. Funny GM gets on the small boosted engine in a big truck wagon after Ford decided turbos are not a cure all came out with a new 7. 3l push rod V8. Really they could have just increased the V6s displacement to 4. 6l and used the same cam profile and head design as the 6. 2l V8 and got a slightly more powerful engine for much less engineering investment. The MPG would be slightly less but the cost would be lower since it can run on cheaper fuel.
