2020 Toyota Highlander First Look

2020 Toyota Highlander First Look

Toyotas Highlander is all-new and oddly Subaru looking for 2020. While the front end might confuse some folks, its unquestionably a handsome design more upscale looking than the outgoing model. Inside the cabin we have an all-new and all-ginormous infotainment screen, more premium materials and more gadgets than ever. But what you won find is more interior room. The cargo area gains a few cubes but legroom and headroom don move much vs the outgoing model meaning the Highlander is still notably tighter inside than the new large crossovers from GM, Volkswagen, Kia and Hyundai, but its also likely easier to park. Oh, and theres an all-new hybrid model as well for those that want to save at the pump

Im glad I did not wait for this and got a CX-9 instead. They didnt change the vehicle that much. The lines on the side of the car are distracting and not pretty. I do not like the over all style. The CX-9 still blows it away. The interior looks a bit nicer than the old version but that screen just overwhelm the whole interior which is lame. There are already too many distracted non-involved drivers and we just keep making bigger screens with more distractions. Tail end is not good with the exhaust buried under the car which is marginally better than fake exhaust tips. I like Toyota ( I own a Tundra) but to me this is a disappointment. Same power train as the outgoing and hopefully the fixed the throttle response or its a total miss. I was hoping for so much more. Glad I got the CX-9. That turbo 4 is plenty quick and very refined for a 4 banger. If this were out today and I had the choice it would still be the CX-9 in this class with the Telluride as a second choice.

What impresses me most about these recent NYAS reviews is that they are produced so quickly and are still the best/most informative on YouTube. The level of focused with all the other tire kickers/distractions about is also very impressive. Well done, you really love what you do and it shows. One metric to possibly include in all your analysis Alex, is Total Projected Cost of Ownership based on Fuel Consumption, Insurance, Projected Maintenance Costs (based on past reliability, Depreciation, etc. Obviously its a very subjective number, and maybe even controversial (which may not be all that bad as a promotional item, but one that would be interesting to see.

Thank you Alex for a great first look review I love my 2018 Highlander Limited and would have considered traded it in for a 2020 but just the interior changes and LED headlights are not enough to make the jump. I use the rear hatch glass 98% of the time to put stuff in the back and them getting away from that was a big negative for me. Also, not adding car seat latches on the 3rd row or extending the length of the vehicle were big let downs. The 2020 is beautiful but maybe not enough for some of us with the current generation.

Is it me, but this redesign looks lower height wise. Did they lower this highlander? I cant say Im a fan of the dented-in rear end from the side view. This Highlander appears to be just lower and longer, but that does significantly improve the 3 row seating; its just a longer car like the others it is still trying to chase. The gas mileage, 34 mpg combined, in the Hybrid is impressive, but with only 240 hp, will it be slow and under-powered to achieve those numbers.

Love your reviews, however, I am very interested in the active safety features that are now available. I am an old fart and active features are high on my requirements considerations. There are not many features one can test when going to a dealership. However, in test driving various car makes, lane alert/lane assist are testable, and each model is unique, some not so desirable. Could you provide who is good and who is not so good on these new features?

Toyota makes less effort than just about anyone else accommodating their styling to Western tastes. To buy a Toyota is to say you value reliability over all other things. Would it really be that expensive to have alternate styling for Western markets. They could keep the styling the same for the entire six year cycle. Changing after three years to an equally gooney look is currently gaining them nothing.

Great review as always Alex. Heres my question/concern. I hear the hybrid engine is new and a CVT. I know Toyota is known for reliability, but Im concerned about a new first year production engine, especially a CVT. Should I be concerned, lean toward the tried and true V6? Im torn because Id actually like to go hybrid and I know Toyota is tops in that space.

Great review Alex, as always. Questions on the hybrid. I heard its a new CVT 4-cylinder with a 4WD light system - is that true? Do you think it would be able to handle snow with the right tires? I know the system has a small independent motor (7-10 HP) for the rear wheels but my concern is limited torque going to the rear wheels in deeper snow.

I owned a 2014. This thing looks much worse outside and much better inside. Subaru - Infiniti exterior and awful fender flares. They could have done something similar to a 97 Land Cruiser but the back doors look silly. The seats and center info-tainment looks beautiful though. Pilot, Palisade and Telluride all look much better.
